"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I'd like to see him reunited in Miami with Mattingly.Anyone got any idea where Puig might end up? Clearly his Dodgers career is over, but maybe some team could get him for a nice cheap price. Greg Amsinger suggested earlier today that the Jays would even be a good fit for him. Bautista possibly gone after this year, and Puig with a nice affordable contract, and 20+HR potential, especially at Rogers Centre.
Not just them, but O's,Indians and Marlins also got bottom 11 attendance in the league this year, all 3 of those teams are in playoff picture.
And when Mattingly replaces Girardi in the Bronx,
Puig can follow him there too.Talk about things nobody cares.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
He is owed 17M combined over next 2 years, and then arbitration eligible for 2019.
He probably would fit in well with those guys. Jays got some characters on their team, and going to a team who would actually want him, after being rejected by his old team, not to mention the ballpark itself would boost his numbers, sounds like somewhere he would like. Not calling the Jays a band of misfits at all, but I could see him fitting with that crew of personalities. Only in the offseason could such a deal work out though. If he doesn't get his act together on the field, his playing days might go behind him very very fast. He is natural talent without the apparent work ethic or devotion, and I hate to assume those things about him but that's how he plays in my eyes. I would hate to ever see him don a Giants uniform (not that something like that is an option).
I mean if Justin Smoak, a .230 hitter can hit close to 20HRs playing for the Jays, even struggling .260 numbers from Puig, no reason to think he wouldn't be a 20HR,80RBI guy. Only negative would be playing on that turf in the OF. With hamstring injuries, that might be worse.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Saw that Francisco Mejia, the Indians catching prospect that nearly became a Brewers catching prospect a few days ago, is verging on the longest hit streak in modern MiLB (since 1963). Mejia's hit in 44 straight games. Going for 45 tonight.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Puig's made a concerted effort in recent years to be a better teammate, so I think the personality concerns, while legit, can be overstated. And contrary to some of the earlier reports, he handled this recent demotion with class.
I think he's a good buy-low candidate for a rebuilding team, since the risk/reward calculus pretty heavily tilts in a positive direction. Best case scenario, he hits like the Puig of old and proves surplus value above and beyond his cheap contract. Worst case scenario, he makes your bad team worse and was an interesting, but failed experiment. Not a whole lot to lose by getting him IMO.I write things on the Internet.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Well Reddick is a FA after this year so it's not unfeasible that he could be a Dodger next year.
Chip, what's your opinion as a fan on that? Would you like him back in the outfield next year if Reddick were to go elsewhere or is he done in LA?Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
His trade value is basically zero right now, so the price on him is basement-level.
He's either getting released this month or traded in the winter for nothing.I write things on the Internet.

This thread needs more pitch appreciation imo. The Reddick talk reminded me of Jharel Cotton.
I think the changeup is the next "in" pitch. Was cutters, went to slurves, now I think changes are gonna be the next fad.
Absolutely a gross change here from Cotton.
Barnes had a beauty last night too.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
A good fastball/changeup combo is still the best pitch sequence in baseball, to me. It's such a feel pitch that it's rare to see guys put in the effort to master it. Jake Arrieta has a filthy changeup and throws it maybe 2-3 times per game. It's mind-boggling.This thread needs more pitch appreciation imo. The Reddick talk reminded me of Jharel Cotton.

Because you don't need it when you throw 95, feature a filthy slutter, a huge curveball, and good command.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Puig has documented plays where the fundamentals of baseball were thrown out the door. It took him what, 6 months to learn how to hit a cut-off man? It seems like the Dodgers got on to him, told him to straighten up, and it just zapped him of his goodness.Puig's made a concerted effort in recent years to be a better teammate, so I think the personality concerns, while legit, can be overstated.
