Why are taxpayers paying for a billionaire company and billionaire owner to make more money?

Communities typically justify that with the benefits the investment provides (as well as the ownership of the asset). In this case the Athletics are paying at least $1.2 billion for a baseball stadium and then giving it to Las Vegas. In exchange for that, the state is giving $180m in tax credits and the county is contributing around $145m in funding and infrastructure credit.

This then adds 81 baseball games and a slate of additional events (think they modeled 8, but everything is a low-middle estimate of the potential) at the venue to put people in hotel rooms, which drives funding for education, roads, etc and is in part why there is no state sales tax.

For the most part studies say that doesn't pay off (as the benefits are not entirely monetary or go directly back to the source of the funding), with Vegas being the aberration because other locations don't have 50+ million visitors a year.

Like Allegiant Stadium, the venue would have to be dark for multiple years (4 in this case) and bring in zero revenue to impact the general fund of Clark County and the state. Vegas would likely have bigger problems if that was ever the case.

All that being said, I'm not saying this is all rosy and we should be happy with it. A large part of it is the cost of doing business. This has created the opportunity for the Raiders and now the Athletics to come to the city and while the Athletics are certainly a shakier proposition the reality is the risk is moderately low for not a lot of money annually in the grand scheme of things. Kaval is a trash owner from all accounts, but he'll have over a billion dollars sunk into something he doesn't own as a reason to invest and attempt to create the atmosphere and team to recover that investment and then some for the foreseeable future. Spending the bare minimum our your team after such a move doesn't seem very prudent - but we'll see how it goes if everything else goes through from here.

Sorry for the rambling, definitely an ADHD-fueled post. As a local I'm excited, but feel for the fans and others who find this all so unappealing. Looking forward to going to some baseball games, never really been my thing but have enjoyed the Aviators games I've been to.

Billionaires are Billionaires for a reason.

They spend minimal and know how to make money.

It's like when companies ask for donations for a charity. You're a multi billion dollar company, don't brag about how your "loyal customers" raised 1m for a charity (in the companies name!). Spend 0.1% of your worth on it yourself.

Or they ask customers to tip employees (because a billion dollar company doesn't want to pay people slightly more so the customers get guilted into tipping the underpaid workers)

Vegas is a sexy city but I feel bad for Oakland. Just bad ownership. I hope the same thing doesn’t happen down the beltway in Baltimore there were rumblings that Peter Angelo’s son wanted to move the Orioles to Tennessee.

I don't see anyone else moving anytime soon except As and Rays.

MLB wants to have expansion but wants those things resolved first.

I think the A's to TN makes more sense than to LV, understanding the AAA team would need to be moved.

Nashville market is BOOMING so huge upside potential.

That would mess up the Divisions if the A's moved to Tennessee.

That's why Vegas makes most sense, it doesn't impact divisions at all.

And IF TB ever moves (the second the Oakland deal is official, MLB will go hard after TB) it has to be somewhere like Tennessee, Montreal, Charlotte.

Beyond that though, if/when MLB does expand, they could get a bit more creative in terms of where they expand because unlike other leagues, they're not confined to having 15-16 teams designated as only east or west.

Having a Nashville team in the AL West really isn’t that out of place when you already have two teams in Texas in the division

LOL sure it is. They are all geographically relative. Those two Texas teams are also more western than any other AL teams (and you also have to remember the Astros were in the NL Central and squeezed into a division with four teams in it without any other realignment necessary, plus they can bus ride to Arlington often). Tennessee would at least be east of probably the entire AL Central.

I always thought it was weird when the St. Louis Rams were in the NFC West and there were other teams west of them, though they were in the North or South divisions so I guess they had an excuse. Now that they are in L.A. all is good again.

NFL divisions make least sense out of all the big leagues which is ironic since I love their division format the best (the north, east, south, west format I mean)

I never heard about this until now
Ken Griffey Jr. revealed why he hates the Yankees in the documentary 'Junior.' Here's why the Hall of Famer never wanted to play in New York

That's why Griffey Jr hates the Yankees.

Vlad Jr also said a similar thing (he'd never play for the Yankees due to "personal reasons").

Not saying it was for the same or similar reasons, but it does go to show how small things can go a long way. Something as simple as the treatment of players (and/or their kids) is something guys won't forget.

Adding onto the things I never knew existed, apparently it's in the MLB rulebook that someone who is ejected is allowed to sit in the stands after their ejection (once they're in street clothes).

Now I'm just trying to picture a manager getting ejected and then just showing up to the game 20 minutes later and sits behind home plate and heckles the ump.

So it would never happen but let's play pretend and act like MLB is going to do a "skills" competition this year. What would you want to see?

                                Here are mine:

                                Best 1st-to-3rd with slide
Infield drill (12 baseballs across the IF, 3 per "zone")
Outfield drill (12 baseballs across the OF, 4 per "zone")
                                Best Double-play tandem
Best catcher to 2nd base pop (so time when the catcher catches the ball until the 2nd basemen taps 2nd base)
Best "relay" team (so OF, cut-off man and catcher...1 is a normal flyball, 1 is down the line, 1 is in the gap and off the wall)
Hitter challenge (20 baseballs to hit various zones...HRs, bunts, down the line, up the middle, in the gap, thru the 6-hole, opposite field, over the 1B and/or 3B head, etc.)

I'd love to do pitcher ones but obviously that would never work.
