Now that you mention it I wouldn't be surprised to see Simon gone. I still think, Pirates try to get either Cota or Davis to pass through waivers or the release of Stynes(even though he had a good hit and a couple nice grabs today) with the return of Bay. Should Simon still be a limping powder puff with the return of Sanchez that may be his time to exit.

Hmm...something just occurred to me. The Pirates will actually have to make two roster moves with Simon on the DL.
I still think Simon is gone. He is slow even when his hamstring is fine. The guy has supposed power, but it's hard to hit homeruns when you swing at the first pitch you see, even if hit is on your face. Wilson has more than enough power to "make up" for the fact he's a right handed batter, handles right handers much better, and is superior defensively.
I have to wonder if Johnston is going to be sent down as well. Considering that Grabow came in yesterday and the game before, and Solomon Torres came in even though Lyle Overbay and someone else (I forget who) were due up and both were leftys, I have to think that something is up.“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in twelve years, we'll be voting for plants.” - Lewis BlackComment

Re: Official 2004 Pittsburgh Pirates GameLog/Chat
I believe Mac said Johnston has a twinge in his back so he held him out of the game yesterday. He said it was nothing serious just keeping him out of a couple games, plus with the off day Monday he can rest it without going on the DL.
I'm not doubting that Simon should be released or will be cause he definatly should be. But Mac seems to like him even though his batting avg. is terrible, he doesn't walk, he's slow and he doesn't have much power. Remembering now that Simon is on the DL, Rivera is sent down to make way for Bay. But if Mac wanted to do somethind that would really make sense he would get rid of Nunez even though he loves him. When Sanchez returns there will be 5 middle infielders for 2 spots, someones gotta goComment

Yeah, I really wish Mac would get over his love affair with Nunez. He's always the first one he uses to pinch hit, even though he's terrible, and I couldn't believe that Nunez got the start the other game. Especially with Bobby Hill hardly playing. Nunez is already the fourth second baseman IMHO (I'd play Mackowiak over him) and once Sanchez comes back, he's going to be that much more superfluous.“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in twelve years, we'll be voting for plants.” - Lewis BlackComment

Re: Official 2004 Pittsburgh Pirates GameLog/Chat
Something in this log jam at second/short has to go. Jack Wilson isn't going anywhere. he's playing too well and is hitting. Castillo seems to be taking the majority of time at second so far. Hill has looked decent so far too, hitting the ball hard when he gets the chance, but he's got no range in the field. Nunez..uck benchwarmer and not a real good one. Sanchez is a wild card so can't really tell with him yet.
In a perfect world, we trade Benson and Bobby Hill to the Yankees for their top 3b prospect Eric Duncan. Sigh... I wish, but packaging Benson and one of our second basemen together in a package would really clear things up and could possibly get us a better player in return.Comment

I like that trade with the Yankees. Wherever they end up trading Benson, I hope that it's to the AL. I don't want to see him dominate the Pirates every year like we get with Jason Schmidt.“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore.
