Re: War on Pitchers...It may be VERY real
I think this problem has to do more with social issues of growing athletes bigger and stronger than what their body can naturally handle.
Look at football as an example. Most positions require very athletic kids to play the position the modern standards, in particular offense and defensive line positions. 20 or 30 years ago, these "athletic kids" would have been playing wide receivers, line backers, quarterbacks, etc. Today those same kids are being grown bigger and stronger and their bodies naturally can't handle it.
Now look at baseball. I am sure most can agree that in baseball you got to have the technical abilities to hit and pitch to be successful. You could be the most athletic person in the world, but if you don't have either of those abilities, you won't make it far. I know that is over simplifying it, but when you look for a quality baseball player, you would like to have the guy who can hit .300 or pitch 90+ mph over the guy who can bench twice his body weight and run a 4.3 second 40 time. What I am trying to get to is that generally speaking baseball players have this same issue of being grown bigger and stronger but (generally speaking) weaker bodies. Latin players aren't forced to get big and strong outside of their body's natural ability to do so, at least not at the same level it is here in the states and at least not till they join a pro team.Comment

Re: War on Pitchers...It may be VERY real
Is it possible we're seeing it more now because it's more of a trusted procedure now?
I mean in years past it was seen more as a last ditch effort but with the success rate it's produced I could see teams more willing to jump to it sooner rather than later.Comment

I thinks it's a combination of that, the fact that teams are very cautious (even too cautious) with their pitchers, and the fact that human bodies just flat our aren't built to throw baseballs 95 mph overhand.Chicago Cubs

Seriously, another great pitcher likely lost for the season. this is sickening. If it wasn't for the parody this year in the divisions and the wild card race, this year would be dead to me.Comment
