    Re: 7/17 - 8/2 Game Discussion Thread

DiMaggio's hitting streak was a confluence of insane luck, amazing hitting ability, and getting to hit against the same pitcher 4-5 times in a game. It's never going to be broken. It's the sports equivalent of a coin coming up heads 40 times in a row.

With the scoreless innings streak, it's not really a coincidence that Los Angeles Dodgers' pitchers have held the record since 1968. Odds are that Greinke doesn't break it and that the streak will continue to stand, but it's like 1,000 times easier to break than DiMaggio's.

I wouldn't call DiMaggio's streak unbreakable. I would call Cy Young's 511 wins an unbreakable record. I think it is conceivable that someone could break the streak. 512 wins pretty much can't happen because of contemporary structural constrains.

DiMaggio's easily. That is one of those unbreakable records. You need to get very lucky to even get close to that record. Right now we are lucky to see hitting streaks get to 20 games, nevermind 30, 40 or 50.

I think the most unbreakable record in baseball is Cal Ripken's consecutive games streak.

I don't count Cy Young's because the game is just too different. It's a non-starter.

Like stated, some records would be next to impossible to break, cause it's completely different era. Like who'll ever break Cy Youngs record of 511 wins,or 749CGs.

The best pitchers of this era haven't even topped 360 wins. And nobody in past 20 years has even topped 120+ CGs.

Some of them get to the point, where maybe there needs to be "modern era" records for some categories(Most of them are starting pitchers ones)

Yeah, you can't really count Cy Young's record in there. I mean Walter Johnson is a shade under 100 wins behind him! The guy who's somewhat in modern baseball history that's closest to Young is Warren Spahn with 363 wins. I think that's the metric that has to be used if we're going to think about that. Even then, the game has changed so much with the usage of pitchers that I can't even fathom someone breaking 300 wins anytime soon.

As far as attainable but unbreakable records I think it's a toss up between Dimaggio's hit streak and Ripken's Iron Man streak. I think Ripken's is feasibly possible as Cal played in an era that, while there are some differences it's still pretty much like the era he played in. Dimaggio's streak is virtually impossible in my mind though because of the variety of pitchers that players have to face, defensive shifting and teams tending to walk really hot players in order to face someone behind them.

Great points regarding Dimaggio...with the lack of durability in today's game, I doubt anybody comes close to Cal either.

LeBron doesn't want to play 82 games so who in MLB would play 162?

Sure, it's conceivable it could be broken in the same sense that a coin could conceivably come up heads 50 times in a row if you flip it enough, but I wouldn't count on that happening.

The fact that professional baseball has been played since the 1870s and no one's come within 12 games of DiMaggio's record should say something about its difficulty.

Phillies Chad Billingsley done for the season. Feel sorry for the guy. Injuries derailed what could have been a good career.
