Baseball managers don't move the needle much and aren't worth that much ire, but he removed two impact bats in key situations the past two Octobers. Might have been the difference between going home early and winning a championship.

We're not a great team, but I don't think any team in the NL is great. Not even the Cardinals, who have gotten awfully lucky with sequencing this year and are outperforming their BaseRuns record by 7 games. The Nationals have a lot of work to do just to make the playoffs and one of the Pirates/Cubs will get cannibalized by the Wild Card Game.
I was mostly referring to recent games, but the issues do go back to the last two playoffs. The guy just amazes me by the way he manages the game every time. I know our bullpen isn't the best but it's as if he likes to dig us into a hole.

IMHO, we won't ever even get to the World Series with a manager that constantly makes questionable decisions in crucial times of a baseball game. As long as the Cards and Giants keep doing what they're doing once postseason comes, Dodgers have no chance without a better manager and bullpen.

Urias and Seager better pan out because for years it's been Hamels or Price, even Lee at one point, but for the better of our future we never pulled the trigger. Lets not forget Ryu either, his injury has been a huge blow to our season too.

Meh, Mattingly is a pretty conventional manager to me. Any bones to pick with him are true for most other managers in the game.

He does have an annoying tendency not to play his best players though, which is the most important thing a manager does. In addition to the "let's bench Gonzalez and Puig" blunders I've already mentioned, Justin Turner should have stopped being a platoon guy months ago.

And when you have two aces, you don't need a third. I'm certainly glad we didn't give away potential franchise building blocks for a 3rd starter (which in this rotation, Hamels or Price would be).

EDIT: And since you're airing your complaints right now, were you not happy about all of our bench players taking the field tonight?

That's what happens when you play an East Coast night game (thanks ESPN!) and then have to fly 3,000 miles across the country, arrive home at 3 AM, and play the same day. The starters needed a rest.

Tough game for the M's tonight. First game in a while where we struggles to get the bats going.

Yup, this is pretty much it. I am not too worry about this losing streak right now either. Just part of the ebb and flows of the season. For all I know, we could win the next 6. We have Greinke and Kershaw the next two nights, then four games against Cincy.

The most important thing is to get to the playoffs. I know the bullpen has been bad, but I think it's been more bad luck than anything. They have a very high BABIP right now, and yet they still have one of the best strikeout to walk ratios.

I read earlier this season that Justin Turner has a knee issue which keeps him from playing every day.

Just to let everyone know, tomorrow at 3:30 EST MLB-N will be doing a bit of a stunt by having Brian Kenny and a few other guys calling the Astros/Giants game from a sabremetric POV. I know it's a gimmicky stunt thing but i'll be watching it.

I would totally watch this if Verizon didn't suck and gave me all 4 of the major sports channels in my package.

I still have love for Stairs from when he played for the A's. One of my fav power swings (when he actually connected). He was like a rich man's Jack Cust.

Sounds awful, lol. Actually I'm sure some people will love it. Will they be able to project the result of the game after a 1-2 inning sample size? Or will the random human element crush their dreams?

Sabermetrically-inclined people appreciate and understand random variation way more than traditional types.

So, they take into account contract years, guys taking a game off mentally, pitchers just not having their stuff that day, bad clubhouse chemistry, etc?

I was honestly being facetious with my initial comment. I can appreciate if people find SABR useful or entertaining on some level.

                              That's an absurd statement.
What's your basis for saying that?

I can't think of how many times I've seen a broadcast where the PBP guy or the color commentator points out that Player X is on a 20-30 hot streak or something and talks about how he's a completely new player, even though streaks sometimes happen and occasionally, when you flip a coin, you'll have a run of heads or tails.

Or when a player hits an inordinate number of HRs that he never comes close to matching again (Brady Anderson in 1996) and traditional sportswriters assume "steroids!!!", when random variation is the answer.

Or when a team wins a large or small number of one-run games, and traditional sportswriters think that "mental toughness" or lack thereof is the key ingredient, when random variation is the answer.

There's plenty of basis for my statement. Random stuff happening is probably the single most under-appreciated aspect in life, period.
