What is up with LA? They look downright dysfunctional the last week or so...

I really hope Don Mattingly days as manager are numbered. The guy is a horrible manager.

It's a four game losing streak (our first since September 2013, btw) against two good teams. We have Greinke tomorrow, Kershaw the day after.

That cures a lot of ills.

Watching the game last night with a friend and he asked me if I thought the Dodgers could win a WS with him as manager...I honestly don't think he's the problem. His bullpen management puzzles me at times, but the FO has never given him a good bullpen to work with. Their 3-4-5 starters are solid, but none of them are guys who can go deep into a game...and the 'pen constantly gets exposed.

They have Kershaw, Grienke, and Gonzalez who are elite players, Kendrick/Grandal/Puig are good, and the rest are inconsistent or average. It's just not s great team, IMO.

I should have worded my original post better, not using the word "again" at the end.

I'm thrilled Carlos Gonzalez is back to normal and I hope he can keep it up. I thought the dude was dead and buried.

Over the last 3 months they are 4 games over .500...it's longer than this week.

I think their performance is tied to Yasiel's play. Since the start of July, he's been horrible.

                  16 HRs last 28 games.

Still surprised nobody snagged him; what a boom he could've been...maybe circa 2004 Beltran.

He was traded to the Rockies from the A's for Holliday in one of Beane's worst trades ever. Still disgusted about it to this day.

                          1. I think DTX3 might have been referring to the last two playoff series against the Cardinals where Mattingly replaced Adrian Gonzalez with Michael Young in Game 1 of the 2013 NLCS (lost in extra innings because Young hit into two double plays) and benched Yasiel Puig in Game 4 of last year's NLDS (lost by one run). Baseball managers don't move the needle much and aren't worth that much ire, but he removed two impact bats in key situations the past two Octobers. Might have been the difference between going home early and winning a championship.

                          2. Friedman + Zaidi hit the reset button on the bullpen last winter by paying Brian Wilson and Brandon League to go away. The bullpen being awful is sort of a recent phenomenon, since they were lights-out in the first 1/3 of the season or so (and that's despite Jansen missing all of April).

Here's a FanGraphs article from April boasting about how awesome and cheap the new-look bullpen was: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jabo-...llent-bullpen/

They have Kershaw, Grienke, and Gonzalez who are elite players, Kendrick/Grandal/Puig are good, and the rest are inconsistent or average. It's just not s great team, IMO.
Well, there's that Justin Turner guy who is pretty awesome. Kenley Jansen is lights-out. Scott Van Slyke and Enrique Hernandez could start for plenty of other teams in baseball and they're both platoon guys.

We're not a great team, but I don't think any team in the NL is great. Not even the Cardinals, who have gotten awfully lucky with sequencing this year and are outperforming their BaseRuns record by 7 games. The Nationals have a lot of work to do just to make the playoffs and one of the Pirates/Cubs will get cannibalized by the Wild Card Game.

That article was awful...for being a sabermetric minded website an article touting the bullpen success of a team TWO weeks into the season is mind blowing. They have regressed to the mean...the thing that blows me away is at the trading deadline they add Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan, two mediocre pitchers, in hopes of fixing it.

No, there isn't a great team in the NL (or AL for that matter), but for what the Dodgers are spending they are a disappointment at this stage of the season for me. I have serious doubts that the Dodgers even make the playoffs at this point...

In baseball nowadays, the ceiling on wins is around 100 or so, give or take a few wins. We're still projected to win something like 91-93 games. I don't view that as disappointing.

And if you strip out sequencing effects, the Dodgers have played like a .600 team this year, or pretty close to the 100 win threshold I just cited. No reason to hit the panic button.

Having a bullpen full of pumpkins doesn't worry you? The Tigers of recent history would like to have a conversation with you.

EDIT: Didn't realize you were talking about making/missing the playoffs there, not necessarily the WS chances...
