O's acquired a pitcher from SD, just not Cashner like rumored.

The Orioles and Padres are in agreement on a trade that will send right-hander Odrisamer Depaigne to Baltimore.

It'll be interesting to watch over the course of the season.
Especially if some of the pitchers hate it.
There's a few problems with the 6 man rotation idea IMO. First of all these starters aren't going to build up nearly enough innings especially if the Mets still cling onto the pitch count philosophy. Honestly, I don't necessarily think the issue is the number of innings thrown but the stress levels of said innings. There's a huge difference between 8 innings or relatively stress free pitching compared to 6 innings where you don't have your stuff and throwing a ton of pitches per inning.

The stress level view of pitching seems to me to be the happy medium between micro managing starters' innings and just running them out there until they're dog tired in the playoffs. It's a theory that seemed to have crop up sometime last year or the year previous and it's one i'd like to see MLB teams try.

It's been around for a while. My Dad talked to me about it when I was in high school. A pitch with a runner on 3rd, 0 outs is more stressful and tiring than a pitch with the bases empty. I keep track of it as a pitching coach at the HS level.

I remember a few years ago the Mets tried to get "giving up the pick" waived when they were interested in Michael Bourn. It never came to pass since Cleveland signed him, but maybe the Rays could look into it if they were really interested in Desmond.

I kinda like Odrisamer Depaigne. He has a good GB rate, and that could help in a small park. His changeup is quite bizarre. At what he's being paid, I'd almost rather have him than Pelfrey. Worst case, you send him down and bring up Green or Boyd.

There was a different circumstance with that. The Mets had one of top 10 worst records, which would've allowed them to have a protected pick, but they had the 11th pick because someone the year before didn't sign their top pick. And if that happens you get the pick after where you drafted the unsigned player. Like the Astros last year, they failed to sign Brady Aiken (1,1) in 2014 because they had some problems with his physicals. And last year they got the (1,2) as compensation for not signing him.

Would be interesting to see the language in the CBA for that. Certainly doesn't apply here though.

Yea I don't know the exact language, but I am always 10 worst records get a protected pick. And in that case they had a top 10 worst record. Definitely would be interesting to see.

I only know a short bit about law but I assume when there's no explicit language outlining a situation outside of the norms like this one, it comes down to the "Spirit of the rules" which would probably be by record as you said.

Was just about to post this, seems like a good reclamation project kind of thing. You never know how a pitcher will bounce back after elbow problems.

Turns out the White Sox contacted the Dodgers about Yasiel Puig rather than Andre Ethier first time around.
