I have no issue with what Stearns is doing, he is copying the same formula that he helped build with the Astros.

I know Stearns is all about saber-metrics and all the stats. Take a guy like Kris Davis, 27 hr's and 66 rbi's while being out for the first few months. He had a low on base percentage and Stearns and the brass around him feel that Santana(another player from Houston for Gomez) is younger with a better OBP than Davis a better throwing arm to boot.

I like the direction Stearns is going.

The Brewers have sucked for the last 4 seasons, are coming off a 68 win season, and new management comes in and decides to tear down the team to rebuild because they don't like the construct...and we are going to call that tanking? Get out of here...the constant talk of "tanking" is more annoying than if a team was to actually tank, IMO. If the Brewers kept the team they had they would probably continue to win 70-80 games a year...why not strip it down and rebuild?

The Astros didn't win with OBP at all. They won with predictive pitching and a lot of power. Rasmus, Gattis, Carter, etc. Davis' OBP isn't even below average.

Fancystats weigh his OBP to his power and boil it down to a number. Davis just isn't particularly outstanding in general. His offense is solid for a COF, his defense isn't amazing, he doesn't add value on the bases. They got a prospect that fancystats say have a lot of potential (and I don't think reports on him are bad either). So I really don't think they're tanking. They just think this was a good deal for them.

Agreed, I was just comparing Davis OBP vs Santana last year. For the Brewers, Davis OBP was .315 over the past 321 games vs Santana .345 OBP last season. Santana may have more upside vs Davis, but he needs to cut down on his K's too.

I will say one last thing about the Brewers. It would be mighty funny/sad if Lucroy ends up being on the team after publicly asking for a trade.

Stearns expects him to show up for ST. They may not trade him now because he came off an injury last year and didn't quite have the stats he's been used to ,(trading power is less) but they probably will trade him at the July deadline.

                    Santana probably isn't a true talent .345 OBP guy I don't think.

I hate the overstatement of OBP though lol.

Being a die-hard Brewers fan, I've fully accepted the fact that we'll be rebuilding for the next few years. I don't mind the Davis trade at all. We traded from a position of depth, and picked up a possible catcher of the future in Nottingham. I'm just waiting for Orlando Arcia to be called up. I'll still go to the regular 15-20 games a year that I do.

Time to get on the OPS+ bandwagon right, right?

It seems like some of the SABR guys are trying to push that stat more than OBP these days.

No OPS weighs OBP and slugging equally. wRC+! Just examines the value of single/double/triple/hr/so on.

You start getting the Commissioner (non-sense) involved in this type of situations and when does it end?
No problem with what the Brewers are doing, just trading pieces and building toward the future.

There have been instances where the Commissioner's office has either nixed a trade or forced the two teams to make it more equitable. MLB is fine if it happens again but we'll see how this rebuild goes for the Brewers.

It has, like in 76' to stop the A's from selling their stars at the advent of Free-Agency.

This just seems like standard tearing down of a bad team to rebuild. Is the Commissioner to intervene every time a team tries to rebuild?
