I just don't get it. The Josh Donaldson trade, the Martin signing. Finding a way to keep Navarro here in a backup role. Taking a chance on Colabello. Finding Smoak. Trading Gose for Travis. Let's not forget the drafting of Stroman, Sanchez, Osuna. These were bold moves that should have been enough for him to get the extension he wanted and deserved. Then there's the trade deadline, if the rest wasn't enough. The only move of his that I would take back is the Dickey trade. Syndergaard and d'Arnaud seem to be proving their worth.
He may have sold the farm, but he brought in a combination of players that, in my opinion, were capable of winning the WS. The 'win now' attitude was a refreshing one and was something this franchise needed. A taste of what winning felt like. A hunger for more. If that means selling the farm, then so be it. Stocking the system with prospects gave us 22 years of misery. A taste of winning, a relevance within the league (they had no choice but to broadcast the Jays on Fox), may have enticed potential free agents or players who have a no-trade clause to Toronto ("Trade me right ****ing now. Just not to Toronto.") to reconsider their options.
I always felt that his job was not just based on responsibility but more about his actual love for the team. Just look at how happy he was when they clinched, or won the ALDS. I'm going to miss that the most.
