Kris Bryant gets a day off finally after a 3-for-18 stretch and Rizzo homers twice to make up ground in the MVP race. Go figure.

    Magic number holding at 10.
Who takes Hammel's spot? Arrieta, Hendricks, Lester, Lackey, Chapman, Rondon, Pena, Zastryzny, Wood, Edwards, Strop (if healthy), and Grimm. You think Joe Smith, Montgomery, or Cahill over Hammel?

So far it's Sammy Sosa on the 2000 Cubs. He hit 50. Still researching though.

The 1996 Tigers had 5 guys hit 20+ homers.

Jays better wake up real soon and get it together. It's a team consisting of mostly veteran guys. Someone needs to step up and give a Donaldson "this isn't the try league,it's the get it done league" type speech. If they play any worse now, they'll play themselves out of a playoff spot when just a week or so ago, they had a 5 game lead over the team out of the wild card spot, and 2 games up on Red Sox. Now after tonight, they could possibly be 2nd in division, tied for WC spot, and only 1 game up on the top non playoff team.

No shame losing to Cleveland, though the way they lost was heartbreaking. But ever since then,it's been a roller coaster of emotions.

I probably take Smith and Montgomery over Pena and Hammel. Smith has been solid after going on the shelf with an injury earlier. He gives a funky look and has a lot of experience setting up. Montgomery has been ok lately. Not sure about Cahill.

If the Cubs feel that Hammel would be decent working in relief, he might make it. I'm not sure we have any evidence of him in a RP role. Maybe more importantly than that, Hammel is the one guy on the staff that, when he's not on, blows up spectacularly. I'm not sure we want a guy who has a history of completely losing it from time to time to be given a role and an opportunity to cost us a game somewhere.

The Cubs may also take an extra position player. 11 pitchers on hand seems to be plenty for a short series and Maddon might want an extra situational guy on the bench. Or he might want to take, like, 6 catchers.

All of this is contingent on injuries and performance down the stretch, too.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Hammel in the playoffs necessarily. He's been really good outside of 3 starts this 2nd half, but like you said, when he's bad he's really bad. It'll certainly be interesting to see what decisions are made.

Guy is slugging .767 in the 2nd half; last guy I remember suddenly lighting it up with HRs as a 2B was Brett Boone.
