Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
My initial gut reaction to this Manny Machado deal is that Baltimore went for quantity over quality. That said, they really need both, lol. The prospects game is always a numbers/attrition game and there are almost never any sure things.
Upon looking a bit deeper, obviously Yusniel Diaz is the "prize" of the deal. Ranked LA's #4 prospect on MLB dot com and the game's #84 overall prospect. He's one of the better position player prospects/outfielders in MiLB and he has a potential All-Star future ahead of him. Plus tools everywhere except rated with fringe-average power (but raked 2 homers in the Futures Game so I poo poo that assessment...no one thought Francisco Lindor was a 30 HR guy either, but he has been).
Zach Pop I don't understand as he's a minor league reliever and has never started a pro game. I'm not up on his pitch repertoire, but if they think he could have 3 good pitches...maybe?
Both pitcher Dean Kremer (ranked LA's #28 prospect on MLB) and infielder Rylan Bannon (ranked LA's #27 prospect) are guys that, frankly, I haven't heard much about. But their stats are great this season. Both are advancing nicely--early 20s and at the A+/AA level. Bannon seems like another well-rounded guy with average-to-plus skills across the board and I'm guessing he gets a boost from his inclusion in this deal as well as a boost fro people realizing he skipped straight from rookie ball last year to A+ this year and is mashing. He could end up being a sleeper for sure.
Breyvic Valera is a little guilty pleasure of mine (he was awesome in an OOTP save I ran with) because he's one of those uber-versatile, make-contact-at-all-cost-and-never-strike-out guys. He could play corner OF or middle infield with some skill. Switch hitter. He's also been up to the big leagues already.
This package is kind of the definition of a smorgasbord and probably the Orioles realize how deep they're in so they're just adding guys they like with no really overall plan. For the Dodgers, in some ways this is a high price (they spent $31M on Yusniel Diaz's bonus plus tax implications alone), but in other ways it hardly makes a dent in their very deep farm system.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
If they would have traded him a year ago, maybe even 2 years ago they would have gotten way more. This is 100% Peter Angelos' fault. PERIOD! His loyalty to the players cost the Orioles in this case.
Teams aren't giving up the farm for rentals anymore. At least non desperate teams anyways.Comment

This is what happens when you trade a guy a year or two too late.
Kinda like the Donaldson situation, the Jays should've traded him when it seemed like STL was willing to give everything for him.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Yes, maybe both Diaz and Bannon become really nice MLB players so this deal doesn't look so terrible in retrospect. But, it's impossible to argue that Baltimore wouldn't have done much better if they'd moved Manny this time last year. They'd also be a year closer to gelling and closer to understanding what they need. And they never would've suffered this abysmal year, paying as much for veterans as they are. A fan base can understand a team going thru lean years while working toward something, but less so when you are putting on a face like you're actually competing for something.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
It's more than Detroit got for JD Martinez last deadline. Orioles got a top 100 prospect for a rental; these days, they should be happy with that. Orioles still have Jones, Britton and Brach to sell off at the bare minimum.
Truthfully though, they should trade anyone with value except Mancini and Sisco, assuming they get a fair offer. Bundy might be an exception, because he hasn't broken out yet. If they decide to keep him and attempt to tap into his potential, it may be worth extending him, so he'd be around once the Orioles are ready to be good again. Sign him while he's a 4-ERA guy; don't wait until he breaks out to sign him.Comment

Dodgers window is closed! Kershaw couldn't do it.He started three postseason games in a series. They came real close, just like my Falcons and loss it. Dodger's might win the division. Dodger's and O's were similar except; they do have a stud starter in Kershaw. Machado can't give them starter innings. Unless Dodger's can sweet talk MadBum from the Giants. Just like I wish my Braves could. Dodger's were trailing in there division and now they back on top without Machado offensive output. Manny Machado is a shining Ferrari. Just for show! Ask the O's???Comment
