He may have messed up with Hinske, but he did a pretty good job with Wells.

BTW, I think Rios will turn out to be a very good player. He's great defensively.

I don't really like the Jays, but I still want Delgado to stay there. I really don't see the team in rebuilding the team.

I wouldn't call Delgado a Mariner just yet. Don't forget, some of the bigger money teams are waiting until after the 12/8 draft pick compensation deadline. They will also be able to throw a bunch more money at Carlos (like the O's).

JP has 18 million to play with if Delgado leaves.

No excuses. Go after pitching. This is the team's weakness.

A lot of people have been all over J.P but I believe last year was just a bad year for the organization. We lost Halladay and Frank The Cat and we never really recovered. The year before last we were doing well until the Yankees came to town and swept us in 4 straight. I think this year we have a chance to at least contend for a good portion of the season. Adding Clement and another solid bat will help. Our biggest concern is our BULLPEN.

You lock them up long term so that they are still "cheap" and

                        1. End up being cheaper during the duration of their contract in comparison to how much they would have demanded after 6 years of MLB Service - assuming Hinske would have continued to improve. Of course, J.P. misevaluated Hinske's growth.

                        2. You don't have to worry about arbitration and trying to lock them up when their 6 years of MLB service is up.

Like I said, J.P. misevaluated Hinske's growth, but it was a risk he needed to take as the Jays GM. Considering that the team had to consider the possibility of losing Delgado in a year (at the time of the deal) and rewind a few years, he needed to tie up some of the potential quality players to assure that they could remain under budget while having quality players and waiting for their other minor leaguers to mature.
There was no reason for JP to sign Hinske long term after his rookie year. He could have made a similar offer if he produced for 2 years in a row. JP always says he works on a small budget so it's puzzling why he would take such a big gamble with such a high risk involved.

When the deal was signed, Delgado still had 2 years left on his contract not one.

Actually JP doesn't have 18 mil to play with if Delago leaves, because players like Doc, Wells, Hinske, Batista, and Lilly are all getting a sizeable bump in their salaries.

Doc goes from 6 mil to 10.5 mil
Wells goes from $700,000 to 2.9 mil
Hinske goes from $800,000 to 3 mil
Batista goes from 3.6 mil to 4.75 mil
Lilly goes from 1.95 mil to 3.1 mil

It's believe JP has a 52 mil budget to work with next season. I think he has around 15-16 mil to play with (unless he makes some trades) to get 2 bats, a starting pitcher, and a lefty in the bullpen and possible another bullpen arm.

I would like JP to shop around Lilly. He's coming off being named an all-star and just had a career season. His value has never been higher. He's a pitcher in his prime but he will be abitration eligible after this seaosn and I wouldn't be suprised to see him get 6-8 mil a season. I would package Lilly with Hinske to the Reds for Kearns and another player/prospect.

This trade would give the Jays more flexabilty and I would also not resign Zaun to save even more dough. Go out and sign Koskie (4 mil) and Clement (7 mil). And then he should still have 8-10mil to get other players.

It would be SWEET if the Mariners can pick up Delgado. Finally, this could be the off season where the M's pick up some big names and make the team better.
