With another day of futility batting with men on base (currently losing 2-1 to Cincy), I stumbled upon an ugly Cubs stat--this team leads MLB in runners left-on-base per game at 7.8. This team is also #1 in the NL in runs scored per game (5.29) and OBP (.336). If ever these guys learn any situational hitting, watch out!

Joey Votto is a good player, but it's not fun watching him bat. All the ducking and diving and dodging and weaving is really annoying. If I'm a pitcher I probably just throw 3 pitches right down the middle and strike him out looking.

This Brewer team is fun, at the moment.

One player is inured, goes on 10 DL, next player comes up and makes a name for themselves.

Let's see if Freddy makes another splash tonight in Minni.

Personally, I wish they would do away with the "centralized" replay center have it all done at the ball park with a 5th umpire sitting up in a booth. In fact, here is really what I'd like to see:

          - The 5th umpire sits in a booth and is constant communication with each umpire on the field (and vice versa). He is essentially a part of the crew with all of the camera feeds in front of him. If an umpire on the field isn't sure about a call, he asks the 5th umpire for help (this is all done without walking over to a head piece/ear phone). The 5th umpire reviews it quickly and makes the best call possible which is then made on the field.

          - If at any point a field umpire has made a call and a manager wants to appeal to the 5th umpire, they can ask for that (just like a manger walking out and asking an umpire to get help). There is no limit, no gimmicky number...just, hey, can you check with the booth on that call? The field up then asks the booth ump and it either stands or is reversed.

I think this system would be seamless 95% of the time. Sure, there would be a bang-bang play that the booth ump has to analyze for a minute or so, but as long as the field umps had a signal that made it clear to everyone in the park that they have signaled the booth to review I think it would be fine.
I proposed a system similar to that a couple of years ago, but I am for certain "limit" or "consequence" gimmicks. Otherwise we really wouldn't need any umpires on the field at all. I'm not for the "robot" system.

Anyway, I still think a consequence of a call not being overturned should be no defensive conferences for the next three outs.

Really though, what I want to get rid of is the phone call from the dugout. "Whatcha think? Watch the play for us and tell us." [manager has his hand up in the air, turned toward the bench coach, waiting for the go] "Okie, thanks." [bench coach shakes head, manager waves challenge off]

I want the manager to call something because in his view the umpire ****ed up. That's how they had to argue calls in the past, and that's how they should have to contest calls now. The fact that calling in ahead of time and only getting half of them overturned now is an atrocity in itself and only gets us more upset about the system, alongside the crowd and even the umpires in that stadium getting a full-blown view of a call that should be overturned and ultimately is not, or vice-versa.

There is so much wrong with this system, and other moments really just ruin "the spirit of the rule," that I think they should just get rid of it. Even for home runs. Just do away with it, and let managers & players argue their heads off again. This isn't being a traditionalist, this is bringing something back that was elementally entertaining, motivating, and really not all that "broken." It seems umpires are worse more than ever, because they have a system to fall back on... and that system sucks.

Well, the Cubs loss in the matinee today encapsulates just about everything that is hard to watch about this year's team. They go 1-for-15 w/RISP and lose 5-4 in extra innings to the bottom-feeding Reds. Justin Wilson gets the loss in an effort where he walked 3 guys, including the winning run, while getting nobody out.

Just when you think Wilson's turning a corner he craps the bed in most spectacular fashion.
