    Things getting crowded at the top of the NL East. If the Braves lose today, then Atlanta, Philly, and Washington will all be tied pending tonight's Phillies-Dodgers game.

      When the Braves lose*

      But they play again in 3 hours, so it won't be a 3-way tie.

        At least older Dansby did something right.

          Not even joking...when Culberson started that game at 3B in Boston this weekend I was thinking "how is this guy still on the roster?" Welp...glad he was.

            Call stands. It was a weird DP turn attempt - home to first and the catcher's throw went into RF scoring 2. Rizzo slid into home, taking out the back of Diaz' leg (which was in the path, Rizzo didn't go out of his way)
            Not sure what angle you had but Rizzo definitely wen't out of his way for that slide. The plate was wide open and not being blocked at all when the ball was released and Rizzo went at him with both legs.

              I just noticed that the Cubs have the best run differential in the NL (+77) and it's not particularly close. Cubs playing about 4-5 games behind their Pythagorean record.

                Yeah he went inside but I'm pretty sure the rule is the same as breaking up a DP at any other base. According to these it wasn't an illegal slide

                He begins his slide (i.e., makes contact with the ground) before reaching the base;
                He is able and attempts to reach the base with his hand or foot;
                He is able and attempts to remain on the base (except home plate) after completion of the slide; and
                He slides within reach of the base without changing his pathway for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder.

                  He still ended up on home plate - that's why I don't think he went out of his way. And that's what they reviewed and the call stood.

                  I do think it was a dangerous play however - I'm not oblivious to that being a Cubs fan. Could have been really bad if Diaz had a spike stuck in the dirt or something.

                    No, don't get me wrong, I'm okay with the ruling and don't think they should have changed it.

                    ^^I just disagree with this, he most definitely went out of his way. I'll stop short at calling it dirty and just say it was pretty unnecessary.

                      I'd have to see the play again to be sure, but at first glance (and on the subsequent replays) Rizzo's slide looked a little...ahem...unnecessary. I don't really want to use the word "dirty." Nor do I think Rizzo was trying to hurt anybody, but I could see how the Pirates would be pretty pissed off with how far inside Rizzo went (and seemed to be looking at the catcher's plant foot the entire slide). At the same time, the catcher might have airmailed that throw into RF no matter what Rizzo was doing.

                          Along with the slide itself (intentional or not), I wasn't really thrilled with Rizzo saying he was "playing hard" after the game in regards to that play. Eeeeeeehhhh.....

                          Watch your head tomorrow, Anthony. Probably will be the only retribution he possibly gets for this.

                            Yeah he's definitely going to get beaned, which is unfortunate.

                            This is a tough one. It's not dirty by any means, and I think it looks worse or has a higher chance of injury because the catcher doesn't see him sliding in like MIF do at second base. Maybe the slide was a little late, but I think the idea of "playing hard" fits with his effort there.

                              Let's just say that if it were Corey Dickerson taking out Chris Gimenez today with a "legal slide," Rizzo would've been the first guy over there to start chirping. But, hey, that's baseball.

                              Even odds that Rizzo gets plunked tomorrow. Sometimes teams "save it for later" so as to not be so blatant.

                                Not a fan of Maddon after his "Planar factitious" BS when Kang got taken out on a similar cheap play. Next Cub up should have been hit in the *** with a fastball, slide was cheap.
