Today is pretty awkward if the Cubs lose, because a Brewers win still puts the Cubs in the playoffs regardless (as a wildcard team at minimum), but would put Milwaukee in 1st in the Central. I'm not even sure how that works really, but I did read it on MLB's site.

But they're up 5-1 right now, so hopefully it's not even something to consider. A Cubs win does the same thing.

I can't even be mad the Braves lost tonight...watching a guy like DeGrom on top of his game is something else. Guy is amazing and had a great season. I don't know if he'll get the CY over Scherzer, but he'd get my vote.

BTW - just to put it into perspective, the season DeGrom just put up is very similar to Pedro Martinez in 1999. The crazy thing is, Pedro had like FIVE of these seasons...

Rockies pitcher German Marquez is now the 3rd pitcher in baseball history to strike out the first 8 batters in a game.

And that is the baseball gods telling you, that you're not going to the playoffs this year. Aroldis Garcia rounding third to score the tying run after ball to first thrown away, and he falls down and is tagged out for the 3rd out in the 8th.

              Damn....

And the Brewers are in the playoffs for the 5th time in history. The bars are jam packed with celebrations going on.

                    Now, go Cards go.

That's even stranger than what I read then. A Brewers win tonight put BOTH the Cubs and Brewers into the playoffs?

Cubs still hanging on to a 6-2 lead for the division lead.

Cubs' lead narrows to 6-4, but Pirates leave the bases loaded in the 8th. Maybe the Cubs will remain in 1st place for another day at least.

Yellich walking 5 times tonight is more rare than 3 homers or a no hitter.

Scores the two runs too. The guy even does it with out hitting.

Last time I checked his OBP was .391 a few days ago, bet it's a bit higher with those walks.

Adjusted to .395 after last nights game.

A few days ago, it looked almost certain that the Brewers and Cardinals would both make the playoffs. The Cards run into a hot Brewers team and the Rockies run into an ice cold Phillies team, and now the Cardinals are a long shot.

Also, as others have mentioned, it's a bit weird that the Brewers winning tonight is what clinched a playoff berth for the Cubs.

Finally, the Cubs play St. Louis for the final regular season series...it would be sweet to clinch the division at Wrigley Field and knock the Cardinals out in one, smooth stroke.

I'd vote Yelich for NL MVP for sure. Javy Baez gets the silver medal, but Yelich has really pulled away. He's basically turned into the Brewers' Kris Bryant (when KB is actually healthy and producing, that is).

I also think deGrom getting win #10 tonight will be enormous for his NL Cy Young chances. That mental difference between single digits and double digits will loom large, insofar as wins should really even be considered at all.
