The difference between cortisone and steroids is that cortisone can be beneficial if used sparingly as it is intended as a legitimate medical treatment. Steroids, when used in the context of athletics, are inherently meant to be abused. You don't take 2 or 3 steroids shots over your lifetime if you want to see any effect. You do cycles of constant steroid use which have terrible effects.
On the other hand, my late grandfather had such chronic problems with his hip that he was given a cortisone shot to ease the pain and remove some of the calcium deposits (or whatever was in there). He did not suffer the degenerative effects of cortisone that you are talking about b/c he didn't shoot cortisone into his hip every day. The people that shot Butkus up every day were abusing cortisone. I don't know that there is any way to use steroids without abusing them.
By the way, I'm not sure of this, but I don't think they knew the negative effects of using cortisone too often back when Butkus played.Comment
