However, they have a sub committee that deals with drug policy, making the steroids issue well within their scope. Also, it is estimated that over 500,000 high schoolers have tried steroids making this a problem worth looking at.

You are correct in criticizing them for not stepping in until the steroids issue becamse a media story. Unfortunately that is the nature of our government. We choose to ignore real problems until something bad happens, then when it does we overreact.
OK, if Congress wants to make steroids a more serious drug by putting into another classification, they should. But they dont need Mark McGwire to do that. If they want to do something about steroid use in HSs then they should but Mark McGwire is not required to do that. There is a difference between the gvt working for you and you working for the gvt. Doing something about the problems is the former. Calling these people out to satisfy curiosity because, in part, Jose Canseco wrote a book qualifies as the latter.

If you knew that in YOUR workplace you needed to take illegal drugs that would harm you and perhaps kill you someday in order to climb the company ladder, would you want the goverment to investigate your employer?

Sure you don't have to take them, but if you want to get ahead in your career or in some cases even have a career you had to take illegal drugs. How would you feel about that? Even knowing that a co-worker whom you were much more talented then was making more than you, getting the promotions because his productivity was up due to illegal drug use. And your boss knew, hell everybody knew. But nobody said anything, cuz if you did you'd be out on your butt. What do you do? Join the club? Take the drugs? Break the law, put your health at risk? Or 'suck it up'? Play dumb like the rest of 'em and hope you're still good enough just to keep your job and watch these cheaters and criminals continue to prosper? All the while knowing your earning power is limited as your career will only last a short time especially if you don't produce some big numbers eventually.

Would you want the government to help you? Can you see why someone else might?

Youre assuming nothing is being done in the scenario you put in front of me but in reality MLB is testing for this. They (MLB and Congress) should approach it going forward but this spectacle before us is a witch hunt.

I agree with you here. I believe an investigation was in order but calling out a bunch of players and former players just because Jose Canseco put their name in a book was an overreaction.

It may be an overreaction but how else is this sub-comittee going to learn how, where, when and why players get these illegal drugs from? I guess they could've just had Canseco testify alone but then he'd bring up Mcgwire's name and other players. The committee would have to bring in those guys anyways to get their side of the story.

Have you not been following the news? One of the guys coming forward with dirt on McGwire recently was one of the suppliers the FBI was investigating in the early 90s. In other words, they should already have the supply-side info.

True but they could possibly want it first hand. I mean it's one thing to have an informant but it's another thing to get the truth out from those who bought the actual goods.

Anyways it will be VERY interesting how this hearing goes down.

Except theres no guarantee they will get the truth. They could always take the 5th. Plus if they were so preoccupied with getting the truth this would not be done in full view of the public. Which speaks to what I said about it not being about ascertaining the truth.
