Portland would have been nice, but their economy is in bad shape. They were runner up in the Expo chase, but couldnt get the funding for a park since their schools are in very bad shape. About a month ago however, they finished the plan for the funding of a park.
Financial Plan
Portland also has some sites planned out. They are right next to Portland's lightrail system and the river. It will be near the Rose Garden and the convention center. Portland is the biggest city in the U.S. with only one sports team, Sacramento is second. Also, the Portland Beavers, San Diego's AAA team, has one of the biggest AAA attendance averages in the Pacific Coast League.

Portland is starting to get their financial problems taken care of, and will hopefully be ready when the next pro team becomes for sale, maybe Oakland or Milwaukee. I will still root for the M's if Portland gets a park, but I live closer to Portland than Seattle, so I will be going to more games there. I go to Portland Beaver games every once in a while.
Also, many people say, "What about the weather?"
While a determination on whether a new Portland ballpark will have a retractable roof has yet to be made, it is worth noting that Portland offers glorious baseball weather during the summer months - clear sunny skies, warm temperatures and low humidity. Only five MLB cities record less rainfall than Portland's 12" during the Major League Baseball season. In comparison, the Washington D.C. area receives over 25" of rain from April to October.
Even during the entire eight weeks of April and May, Portland receives barely over four inches of rain, less than all but seven MLB cities during those two months. Washington D.C. gets more than seven inches of rain in April and May. New drainage technology and the lack of heavy rain in Portland during the spring would likely translate into very few rainouts in a Portland open-air ballpark.
In 2001, the Portland TV market generated a stunning 4.3 cable TV rating for Seattle Mariners' games, a better mark than 19 MLB cities recorded for their own teams - including the Yankees, Cubs and Giants. Most impressively, the Portland region then produced a 4.5 rating during the 2002 season, when the Mariners failed to make the playoffs.
After tickets to the March 29, 2002 Mariners-Padres exhibition game sold out in 15 minutes, 20,000 MLB fans packed Portland's PGE Park, while thousands more tried to catch a glimpse from outside the ballpark. The weekday afternoon game drew the highest daytime TV rating in the history of Fox Sports Net in Portland.Comment

I can't find statistics on Stingers sales, but the issue in SLC with any pro league is that Sunday games are a waste. Whereas in most cities, that's big sales, here the majority of the population is not allowed to spend money. At all. Even during the week, people are quite occupied with church life.
We have the Jazz, and a MLS franchise is opening. We have 2 minor league MLB teams (AAA SLC Stingers, Pioneer League Orem Owlz), and an AHL team. Plus, of course, rabid college sports followings.
I'd love to see a MLB team here - the metro area is about 1.5 million. It's just a demographics that doesn't fit with pro sports.5WG | Facebook | Twitter | fiftytwoplays

Opening Weekend for Shrek 2, one of the bigest opening weekends ever, we hit a kids' matinee on Sunday, at a popular theatre. There were about 10 other people in the audience.5WG | Facebook | Twitter | fiftytwoplays

If Baseball ever decides to expand again i think Memphis would be one of the cities to get a team, Portland or Las Vegas would likely get the other. Charlotte would probably be a good place for a team but they can never seem to get funding for a stadium, thats one of the reasons they lost out on the Expos and also why they could not get the Twins to move there in the late 1990's.Comment
