Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

I would love to package Nixon and a pitcher for somebody solid, but there's just no one out there right now. I have a feeling that this could be the year that the trading deadline really brings us a big bat or arm simply because of the low supply in the offseason and the positions that we seemingly have stockpiled right now.

I agree. I love Trot but he's had a hard time realizing his potential and consistency is a problem. He's also become an injury prone player and his defense is already starting to decline. He's not yet a liability out in right because of his fearlessness and knowlege of the nooks and crannies out there, but he may soon become one. The only guys available though are Dave Roberts and Steve Finley and neither is an upgrade over Nixon. Who could become available July 31st? Griffey is always out there but I can't think of an incumbent outfielder who could make a difference.

Single game tickets went on sale today. I got 3 loge box tickets to the 7/29 Saturday game vs the Angels. Anyone else have any luck?

Looks like the Sox finally signed Alex Gonzalez to a 1 year deal for $3 mil. This is actually a pretty good deal since originally they were talking about 2 years for $10mil.

I usually go to Baltimore as well. Unfortunately this year the only weekend series in Baltimore is the first weekend of the year. I think Tampa and Chicago are the two I'm gonna hit this year.

I don't mind that signing since it is 1 year. I thought 2 would be just throwing money away. At worst, he'll provide solid defense and bat .250 in the 9-hole. It's not like we had much offense in the number 9 spot last year.

It also doesn't cost that much if you decide Cora/Pedroia is a better option.

With the current roster, the Red Sox are going to have some tough decisions to get down to 25 men on opening day.

tek, bard, cora, graffanino, loretta, lowell, snow, youk, crisp, nixon, ramirez, stern, ortiz, gonzalez, mohr

That's 15 players for 13 or 14 spots, depending on how many pitchers they decide to carry.

They also added Willie Harris, who normally would make the 25 man roster just because he can run and sub at 2nd but I bet he either gets sent to Triple A or they trade him. Graffanino is likely to be delt as well, but if he can hit the way he did last year, maybe they trade Cora instead and keep Graffanino as a bat off the bench? Neither player is going to get much in the trade market other than a low-level prospect or a journeyman reliever. I think they'll likely carry 11 pitchers though, especially just after spring training with all the off days that usually fall in April. Of course, everything can change if someone gets hurt or if a guy like Keith Foulke isn't ready for the start of the season.

According to a LA paper, the Sox opened up discussions with the Angels about Manny. The Sox want Chone Figgins, Ervin Santana and two top prospects. They also want the Angels to take all the salary. There is no way the Angels do that but I think that report is only to show Manny that the Sox are shopping him.

If the Angels did that for some reason...wow.

I know Manny's good, and Figgins doesn't replace his bat but I mean, he's a good player

Either way we've got some deals up our sleeves from now until the end of spring training. There's probably no connection, but I wonder if the Gonzalez signing stalled to see if we could actually get Brandon Wood off of the Angels' hands? The kid hit 43 home runs last year...

I think from now till the trading deadline of the upcoming season, you'll see Clement or another pitcher packaged with an extra infielder (probably Cora, maybe Graff) or even Nixon in a blockbuster. And if they perform well and stay healthy, depending on what teams need due to injuries and playoff contention, we could really make out with some key players and/or prospects. There's no rush IMO, just sell high.

Exactly, the Red Sox have no need to rush. They can take this team to spring training and see who raises their stock more. Of course, its possibly Wells and Clement could look awful this spring and lower their value but it's a risk worth taking, at this point.

There has been talk that the Sox would move Crisp to LF, Figgins to CF and spin Santana Kevin Youkilis and at least one prospect to the Reds for Adam Dunn, but that seems like pure speculation.

The Red Sox asked for Figgins and Santana knowing that the Angels would never agree to trade them, Theo is just toying with the Angels. The Angels seem like a very egotistical organization to deal with, a few months ago one of the Manny/Angels rumors had the Angels telling *not asking* telling the Sox that they would have to take Darin Erstad and Steve Finley in any deal, the also demanded that the Sox pay all of Erstad and Finley's salaries as well as a large portion of Manny's, the Red Sox of course said no.

The Angels refusal to trade prospects is the reason they don't have Mike Sweeney, they could have had Billy Wagner last july but would not part with Jeff Mathis and have been shot down in every trade they have tried to make this winter. The only trade the Angels successfully pulled off this winter was the great Steve Finly for Edgardo Alfonzo trade, and all that was was trading one aging veteran with a bad contract for another.
