Yeah, I don't know how we're going to do against Peavy, but the team is clearly on a high right now.

I just hope they can take some of this on the road with them.

Ugh...shut out 1-0 by Chris Young and the Padres today.

I'm so glad we traded him for a guy that we cut the next spring training

Watch, this will put us in a funk and we'll go 1-whatver on this next roadtrip.

That's the second game in a row that Young has pitched a 1 hitter. Just think, we traded him away for nothing because the Pirates front office thought he didn't have good enough stuff to pitch at the MLB level. I guess they saw a 6'10 guy and expected 95+ MPH heat. He didn't have it so he wasn't valuable.

We've been hot lately and I've heard fans state that this is it. We're turning the corner. I think it's just been a nice hot streak....nothing more. We've also faced some pretty young and bad pitchers during the streak.

I don't feel good about this next roadtrip. We'll see though.

I just have nightmares about Josh Fogg shutting us out in the Rockies series...

To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of today's lineup either. McLouth has shown he's a much better #2 hitter, and Bautista is a much better leadoff hitter. I know you have to give players a day off here and there, but I would have rather seen Wilson playing than McLouth.

I don't know how long Doumit is going to be out for, but the injury didn't look good at all. If he's not lost for the year, this is going to be Cota's last chance to stay with the team, I think.

Actually, it was a two-hitter and the game before he only allowed one hit... not that it would make anything better.

Rag3vsW0rld - Yep, my mistake. It was a 2 hitter.

LGoP - Doumit's injury didn't look good at all. They're saying 2 weeks, but I think it's going to be longer. Looked like he really popped his hamstring. One thing's for sure, he won't be healthy the rest of the year. That's going to take some extended rest to heal.

McLouth has even stated he loves to hit #2 and doesn't feel comfortable at #1.

Craig Wilson's time has really dropped since Casey has come back (or it's just my imagination). I heard Tracy and Craig had a talk yesterday. I wonder what that was about. I know Craig isn't happy and has said so in the paper. Oh well, he's not coming back next year anyway.

Re: The 2006 Save us Mark Cuban Thread

Here's my take on Craig Wilson: he NEVER has shown that he deserves to be a starter at any position. He plays the outfield and first base adequately, but not well enough that he shouldn't be replaced by a better player.

Likewise, he's way too streaky of a hitter to play 130+ games. He's almost like Burnitz, in fact (lots of power, lots of whiffs), so I think the platoon situation fits. Casey is MUCH better both as a fielder and as a hitter than Wilson, so I don't see his whining in the paper as accomplishing anything except maybe expediting a trade to another team.

Re: The 2006 Save us Mark Cuban Thread

LGoP - I agree about Craig. I've always seen him as a very streaky, inconsistent player. When he's hot, look out though. My biggest issue is with management though. Why sign Burnitz when you have his equal in Craig Wilson (probably even better)? Platoon makes the most sense as CW crushes LH pitchers, but struggles against RH'ers and JB crushes RH pitchers, but struggles against LH'ers. Pretty expensive platoon though.

I know CW will be traded, but sitting 1/2 his games on the bench and knowing he no longer wants to come back is only decreasing his trade value. It's funny but the media keeps harping on CW and his agent trying to sign an extension here. I believe that WAS true, but not anymore. He's wanted out for the past 1-2 months.

Anyhow, game 1 in COL was a great pitching performance by Snell. When he keeps his head on straight, he can dominate. That was really nice. Only thing that would've made it better was more efficiency and pitching deeper into the game. However, he's young and he'll get it eventually with better knowledge of the hitters. Don't pull an Ollie and try to make him do it now.

Last night was a heartbreaker. Cota's hit just missed being out of the reach of COL 2B Carrol. That would've tied the game in the 9th. Instead, we lose 5-4.

Another note, what's up with Torres? He's been very average to below average this year. It looks like his location is really suffering. We signed him to an extension this offseason as well. Gotta love how that seems to happen a lot.

Sean Casey - Rumor is Pirates are looking to sign him. I'd be happy if they did for 1-2 more years. 2 at the most though. If we don't sign him, who's at 1B next year? It's not Eldred since he's out the rest of the year with a hand injury. I've heard some say Craig Wilson. Ehh, I'd rather have Casey for 1-2 and hope Eldred pans out FAST.

Wow...I didn't see the game, but Perez gave up 9 runs in 2 innings today. What the HELL is his problem?? He was lights out for a little while, and now he's gotten shelled twice in a row. If he's not careful, he's going to be the one replaced when Kip Wells comes back, not Victor Santos.

As for Sean Casey, I'd like to see them re-sign him. Eldred's year is wasted, so he's basically going to be at the same point next season. Craig Wilson won't be back, period, for next year, so we can count him out. Because of this, they pretty much have to sign Casey or someone else next year. I really don't want to see Ryan Doumit playing first on a regular basis.

This is exactly how I have felt about them for years. There is no direction and it seems that the scouts/GM are lousy at evaluating talent. They have zero power hitters in the minors that they are developing. I'm still waiting for the "develop a ton of pitching so you can trade them for hitters" plan to kick in.

Perez was flat out awful. Not sure what's left to do for him. Too bad they didn't trade him to Texas for Blalock when they had the chance! I also think it would be a good idea to re-sign Casey for a couple of years.

On the bright side, Snell has looked very good lately and they are not giving Randa the starting 3B job back when he's healthy. I guess that's something to be excited about.....

Well there was a new way to lose last night. I wonder how many different ways they've lost this season...

Have they balked in a run to lose yet this year?

Problem with perez is they tried messing with him So much he probably don't remember how to just pitch...Its like if I teach you to smoke, eat,& write with your left/right hand(Depending on what you favor)..then after two years say Ah hell nevermind all that, just do it like you did before...at times you will use original hand, at others back to the Opposite hand, its a habitual subconsious thing...you do it w/o even thinkin bout it...they may be what is happening...maybe it isn't, I'm not perez, I can't tell ya. and if you send him down any confidence he has left might just go with it...its one of those double-edged swords..Tried to change mechanics to make his career longer, ended up with a clusterf***. instead of a longer career seems like ya shortened it cause now nothig works, go figure only the pirates can screw up our first decent pitching prostpect in years...F'n Pirates

                            I'll put my question here

Joeboo said (in re: to the Pirates in another thread)

Maybe next year? There are a few young guys really coming around so I hope the added experience this year does them good. The organization is starting to play the kids instead of stopgap vets so that's a good sign.
So how is Duke doing? Is he doing better nowadays then he was at the start of the year? I ask because I was really impressed by him last year.

                              Meh...so, so.

He's definitely not doing as well as he did last year, but that would have been really difficult to do. For some reason, the coaching staff decided to tweak his mechanics a little, and it seems to have thrown him off a bit. Lately, he's been doing much better, though he has a bad habit of giving up a lot of first inning runs.

Right now, he's 4-6 with an ERA of 4.25. He's shown signs of getting better though, because he hasn't lost in his last three starts (2-0, 1 ND).
