    Re: 2006 Philadelphia Phillies Thread

While I applaud both of your positive outlooks, I am, in fact, giving up right now. The bullpen might be a "little off?" This is probably the worst bullpen I've seen from the Phillies in my lifetime. Hamels is great, but unfortunately he's only 20% of our rotation and unless he can pitch a complete game every time out, the atrocity of a bullpen is likely to ruin most, if not all, of his starts for him.

I think the main reason that people are giving up so early is that this is a very, very tired act for this team. Too much hacking, too much striking out, can't hit with RISP, bullpen blowing leads, a manger who has absolutely no idea how to manage a baseball team, etc etc etc. Every year the team gets off to a slow start and we're told, "It's only April, it'll all be ok once we sort things out." And then every year, when we finish a few games out of the playoffs, the team says, "Well shoot, maybe if we'd won some of those games in April...."

This year, I'm one step ahead of them. I've seen it all before and I'm not letting them fool me again. Unless immediate steps are made to fire the manager, get us some bullpen help, and teach our hitters some small shred of plate and/or game awareness, I'm done with this team. I can't watch them fail, again, the exact same way they've failed for the past 5+ years. I can't do it to myself.

      Yeah, notorious slow starters.

This is the losingest team in all of team sports.

Slow start = yet another early offseason.

When Manuel gets fired, is there a chance they could lure Dusty away from ESPN Baseball work like the Cubs did Pinella ?

Someone posted this on a board I read....

Eskin asked him can't he get mad like Piniella - Chollie hemmed and hawed and said that he can get that way - go in and trash the clubhouse, he could come in and throw all the chairs around in the post game conference room too, but he felt that the players were still trying, and what good would that do at this point.

Eskin said there doesn't seem to be an urgency, either with the players or him as the manager (for once, Eskin in DEAD RIGHT). He suggested that yelling at a player might convey that urgency - Charlie says he has done it before. Eskin says he has never seen it - and Charlie says, come into my office and I will go off on you.
I must find video. Oh my god....I must find video. Please, I implore anyone reading this to send me video of this event if you find it.

Yeah yeah. And of course, as usual, they will just miss the wildcard.

                        Why?

went down to the ball park today, great game Jamie Moyer really pitched well and Rollins just keeps tearing the cover off the ball, Wait til Howard gets heated the lineup will look scarey. Fans went crazy after Jayson Werth made that great catch. Got a practice ball signed by Hammels, caught it off Cabrera's foul ball during BP.. Def need to take atleast 5 of the next 8 on the road..

It's been about two weeks since somebody posted here!
Guess there's not that many Phillies fans on this board.

Anyway, just wanted to say a few thoughts.

I thought that the game on Mother's Day was pitiful. Up until the 8th inning we had one hit by Nunez, which wasn't even really that great of a single. Then we had some offense going, and of course we left a few on base (we lead the NL in stranded runners), but we got a run off an error.

Then in the top of the 9th the Cubs blew open the game. We went from being down 1 to down 3. Manuel brought in a guy who hasn't pitched in over a week with the bases loaded, and then takes him out after he walks in a run! I just was appalled at the decision, but nevertheless we got out of the inning giving up 2 runs, and it could have been much worse.

It was an ugly game to watch, hopefully this team can turn it around.

I think that once Howard gets back and he starts hitting again like last year, we can pull off a streak of maybe 8-9 wins outta 10. Hopefully I'm right.

Would love to hear your opinions.

Oh, there's Phillies fans here...we just kinda sit back and watch this team do their usual "Phillies" thing

This team is going nowhere without a bullpen and better hitting past the 4th spot in the lineup.

Oh yeah...and there is Charlie Manuel. He's growed up into a bad manager.

Re: Home of the Philadelphia Phillies

Manuel is a horrible coach. He couldn't win with a good bullpen, but he's been dealt a terrible one by....

Pat Gillick. He did a terrible job of addressing our true needs this offseason while piling up crap like Helms, Werth and Barajas. And he was hired by....

Dave Montgomery. From the top on down, this organization stinks. You can improve the team, but the manager would still screw it up for you. But the GM won't improve the team, but he'll keep the manager around because he's a lightning rod for the wrath of the fans. And the coach and the GM aren't going anywhere because the ownership group is clueless, and even if they do make a change at the top, it would be to install Reuben Amaro Jr as the new GM.

It's the definition of hopeless. The team is rotten to its core, so much so to the point where discussion of the actual players on the field is almost a moot point. Until the coach, the GM, and (most importantly) the ownership group are removed from power, this team is going nowhere. And the ownership group has a total deathgrip on the franchise.

On the bright side, we should hit 10,000 losses around the All Star Break....
