They can't implode that disaster fast enough.

From what I remember the pics of the new park look amazing.

It's a disaster, but it's a disaster that will always hold a special place in my heart. I went to Shea in the days of Dave Kingman, Hubie Brooks and Craig Swan. The day my Dad took me to my first game, it was Seat Cushion night, and we played the Astros. Danny Heep hit a home run that sailed right in front of us, to put the Stros on top. The fans were so pissed, they threw the cushions toward the field. The next day, I was anxious to read the account of the game in the newspaper, and it started, "The Mets' fall into last place was well-cushioned...." So the old dump will always be dear to me. I might even try to get a brick or stone or something from the place.

Very understandable. Hubie Brooks, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Hubie could certainly hit the ball.

aww - I just missed out on the "Hubie" era.. became a "Metie" the year that Carter came to the team & the "Straw Man" hurt his thumb ('85) ...

Yes. George Foster too...until they canned his butt halfway through the season and picked up Lee Mazzilli to replace him.

George Foster was an abomination in a Mets uniform. Goodness, he sucked. I was glad we got Maz back, he was one of the original Mets in my early memory... When we got Keith Hernandez in the middle of 1983, I was ecstatic. That was part of the beginning of the big turnaround. I wish we could have kept Hubie, he was another of my favorites, and he was probably my Dad's favorite Met.

One of the best years for me was 1985. My homeboy in my building was a big Cardinals fan, since his dad played in the lower levels of their minor league system. So we were going at it all year, down to the wire... Good times. Needless to say, I became a big Royals fan in the World Series.

Foster... ugh. Guy was a monster for the Reds but was just so freakin bad with the Mets. Oh well, the tides seem to have turned for the Mets now

course remember too Foster implying his release was due to "other factors" rather than the fact he, well, stunk..

I guess that would also make the LA Dodgers, LA Angels, SD Padres and SF Giants the teams to beat. Plus the Yankees.

Was Mazzilli the one that said he liked to keep his batting gloves in his back pocket so they could wave to people as he was circling the bases? Anyone remember that?

LOL!!!! I remember that!!! I was like 13 or so when that happened, and I remember thinking, "Yeah, the fact that you're hitting like .240 has nothing to do with it... Must be your race..."

I don't even remember anyone picking him up after that.

EDIT - yup.. CWS to end that season & in fact, 86 was the last of his career..
