Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds
There is absolutely no way on Gods green earth the Reds are going to fire Dusty this year. He was just brought in, he has managed what like 40 games!!!??? They are not going to fire a manager that is 40 games into a 4 year 12 million dollar deal! Sorry that I am ranting here but I am just getting tired of everybody saying "lets fire Dusty, I hate Dusty". Its just stupid talk and there is no way it is going to happen.
Plus this is a message board used to discuss things that we like and dislike about the Reds. And right now, Dusty, among other things, is what people dislike about the Reds so he will be discussed. Plus it is nice to dream isn't it?#WeAreUKComment

Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds
I understand what you are saying, jake. And I agree that it would be crazy if they did fire him atfer 40 games. But you have to admit that his way of thinking is FAR from the norm and doesn't seem to bode well for baseball in general. Between the OBP theory and the lineup thing, plus him not knowing that Patterson was in an 0 for 20 something slump because he wasn't striking out a lot...well it just seems silly.

Can we not be rational and realize there is no way he is getting fired this year???
Besides is it really his fault that we only have 2 good pitchers and we only hit when one of them pitches? Is it his fault that Jr is a shell of his formal self and has a whopping 18 rbi's while batting 3rd? Or that Dunn is batting .214 with 17 rbi's? Its not Dusty's fault that these 2 guys that make up about 1/3 of our payroll are not producing.
Who would we get if we fired Dusty right now??
What would he change??
Again I am just tired of hearing and reading everyone saying that Dusty needs to go now.
As for the Tony Perez comparison, there is no comparison at all. Tony was making peanuts compared to what Dusty is getting paid. Tony was fired because the owner and GM wanted to bring in a big name manager at the time.ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

I understand what you are saying and I agree he manages really weird at times, I really think he just basically goes with his gut feeling on everything. But between sports talk in Cincy and this board I am getting tired of everyone saying and thinking this is all Dusty's fault. Everyone keeps saying lets fire him right now and there is no way he is going to get fired before the end of next year atleast.

The problem I have with Dusty is the way he pulls these line-ups out of his ***. It really makes no sense. The Patterson signing along with Hairston Jr drives me insane and has Bakers fngerprints all over them.I am a huge Reds fan and watching these rejects play is not what I looked forward too this season.
If we are going to lose then lets lose with our future. Jr and Dunn need to be delt. Patterson and Hairston cut. Follow the Marlins blueprint and play our younger prospcts and win a couple of Championships. I could live with that.NFL:Packers

Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds
Relax man. Unless Baker is a relative, you are taking this conversation way to personal. Perez was making peanuts compared to today's standards yes. But we are talking about the Reds and I have no idea what Baker's deal is payed if he gets fired. I do understand that this is a business and Reds fans want a playoff contender. If Dusty can't do anything better than this he will be gone.

So again the Marlins "blueprint" to winning 2 titles was not cutting their veterans and playing their young players.
Again I think most of you are not understanding what I am trying to say. I am just tired of hearing everyone calling for Dusty's head when 1. He is not going to get fired any time soon and 2. Most of this mess is not his fault.ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

Sure he's only managed in what 40 or so games so far, but firing him this early wouldn't be without precedent. Remember it was just a few years ago when Phil Garner was fired after SIX GAMES as the Tigers' manager.
Sorry man, not trying to make you angry or anything but Dusty Baker is probably the worst fit for this team and it will only get worse if we trade away Griffey and Dunn.Lux y VeritasComment

Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds
The Marlins did not win their two world series titles with young players. They won with huge payrolls and after winning each title they then traded and released all of their high payed players and sucked! The Marlins are winning this year with young players but will not continue to keep winning, they are way too young.
So again the Marlins "blueprint" to winning 2 titles was not cutting their veterans and playing their young players.

I really do understand your point of view and respect it. As Reds fans let's hope they turn this catastrofuc of a season around.Last edited by Jackdog; 05-13-2008, 03:34 AM.NFL:Packers

Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds
Baker on Cueto, Patterson
Dusty Baker met with Johnny Cueto before Monday's game. The message was simple: When catcher Paul Bako puts down a sign, throw the pitch he asks for. Cueto shook off Bako quite a bit in Sunday's start.
"That alleviates him having to do a bunch of thinking and concentrating and delivering the pitch," Baker said. "This way he can be more committed to making that pitch. All he has to think about is making that pitch and locating it."
Baker has full confidence in Bako.
"That's Bako's strong suit," Baker said.
Edinson Volquez, the Red other young right-hander, rarely shakes off Bako.
ON PATTERSON: Baker was asked if he's thought about moving Corey Patterson down in the lineup.
"Yeah, what makes it kind of rough is you don't want to me left-handers in a row," Baker said. "That's what I'm trying to stay away from. He's going to get going. Guys usually end where there (career) average is. . . we don't have a bunch of speed. You need speed, especially in close games."
Patterson is hitting .196 with a .252 on-base percentage. He has five steals but he's been caught three times.
Ryan Freel, hitting .313. with a .356 on-base, will be in tomorrow against left-hander Mark Hendrickson.
Is it time for Bruce?
Is it time?
Jay Bruce, the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball, is on a tear. He went 4-for-4 with two doubles and home run in the first game of Triple-A Louisville’s doubleheader and 1-for-3 with run scored in the second game. He’s hitting .348 with seven home runs and 29 RBI. He has 17 hits in his last 29 at-bats.
The Reds started Corey Patterson, who is hitting .196 in center fielder Monday.
Bruce is a left-handed hitter, but he’s hitting .370 this year off lefties. Adding Bruce would allow the Reds to use Ryan Freel, who is hitting .350 off lefties, to spell Adam Dunn (.167 vs. lefties) and Ken Griffey Jr. (.162 off lefties).
The Reds look like a team in need of a boost. Sometimes a player can do that. Milwaukee got major boost last year after calling up their top prospects, Ryan Braun, on May 25. Braun won the NL Rookie of the Year.

How good was Cordero last night??
I am really glad they held on to get Harrang the win.
Oh and what was up with Jr dropping the ball to allow 2 runs to score, and then he almost dropped the next one???
Nice to finally see Patterson hit, 4-5.
And one last thing Keppy is the man and should be batting 3rd!ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds
The quest to add more pop to the Mariners lineup may be taking a swing through Cincinnati.
The Reds apparently are more than willing to trade outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., and Griffey's original team, the Mariners, is in the process of checking out the 38-year-old slugger to see if he might be the answer to an underperforming offense.
Duane Shaffer, a special assistant to Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi, was in New York on Sunday to watch the Reds and the Mets play at Shea Stadium and, more specifically, to watch Griffey, who went 0-for-2 with two walks.
Mariners sources say no deal is imminent, but as long as the club continues to struggle, every time a Mariners scout watches the Reds, it will be news.
Entering play this week, the Mariners have a need for a middle-of-the-lineup power hitter (a lefty, like Griffey, would be the best fit). Off the field, Griffey would be a major draw in the city that was his home for a decade. After eight of the 10 smallest crowds in Safeco Field history have turned up this season, the ballclub would have to consider the attendance implications and financial advantages of having Griffey back in a Mariners uniform.
How much Griffey has left as a player isn't clear. He hit 30 home runs last season in 144 games, and has averaged 31 homers the past three seasons. But he has just four in the first six weeks of the 2008 season to go with a .254 batting average.
The story goes on to say:
But there are potential barriers to a deal. Suggestions that he come aboard in Seattle as the designated hitter probably wouldn't go over well with Griffey, who is playing right field for the Reds and wants to play in the field. If the DH job is all the Mariners can offer, a deal probably will never have any legs.
For the Mariners to fit him in the outfield, they'd probably have to shift left fielder Raul Ibanez to DH and right fielder Wladimir Balentien to left.
Griffey is a 10-and-5 player (10 or more years in the big leagues, the past five with the same team) with the right to veto any trade. If no trade happens in the coming weeks, the Mariners are expected to be a serious suitor for his services should he become a free agent this offseason.Comment
