How many times has anyone said "this white built team" or "this black built team" just isn't working?

Many times here in Philly. Beat writers and hosts on WIP called out the Phillies for having predominantly white clubs and not going after black or Latin ball players, especially star players.

I think Jerry was put in an impossible position. He wasn't hired by Randolph, he was hired by Minaya. And by all accounts, he has a good relationship with Bernazard... He also did seem to go out of his way at the press conference to outline the ways that he would be different from Willie.

I also read something just now on another forum that disturbs me... Bernazard, who has been aspiring to be a GM (he interviewed for Pittsburgh's opening last year, and is rumored to be in the running for Seattle's job), might be moved up to GM if Omar has to fall on the sword for the team.

I knew you'd come along, bro... That type stuff boils my blood like nothing else... The team is "built" around Latins, but pigment-challenged David Wright is basically the face of the franchise, and equally challenged Ryan Church was on his way to becoming an All Star...

Exactly.

It really annoys me that we have to point to the non-Latin players that were acquired this past summer as proof.

What do they expect? They got Carlos Beltran at the time who was the biggest free agent on the market. They got Pedro who was one of the biggest pitchers in baseball off the free market. The trade for Delgado made sense since he was threat at the plate at the time (and I'd still argue he is now, at times). Hell, we get rid of LoDuca b/c of his attitude and Castro doesn't become the starter b/c he is "Latin" but instead we trade for Schneider and Church and get rid of Milledge, again, because of his attitude.

Pointing to race or the racial makeup has nothing to do with the talent level of the team nor does it have any factor in why they're under-achieving. They're playing like ****, without passion and not getting solid innings from the bullpen, and that's why we have the record we do, not because of where anyone on the team is from.

The difference is people make it seem like the Mets are going out of their way to acquire Latin ballplayers just to say the Mets are an all-Latin team and that's ridiculous.

They act as if they haven't gone after Barry Zito, aren't checking interest in Adam Dunn, or any other number of moves/interests that include players of all backgrounds.

This really shouldn't even be an issue but since the marketing team has tried to sell the team as "Los Mets" to the Latin community the media has acted horribly irresponsibly. It's obvious this silly insinuation has perpetuated amongst fans as well.

but you know what? So what? The caliber of players, who is good and who is hot, changes from decade to decade. Were you one of those clamoring for more black and Latins in the early 60's? If you're old enough, I doubt it. And on the other side of the coin, maybe you weren't because you're not as old as me. Therefore, you only know what you know.

Taking the Mets alone, as late as the 70's, there was hardly no black or Latin players consistently on their roster. The New York Mets = white. And so did other teams. What would you say about that? What about the Astros a few years ago? The only black player on their roster was a utility player whose name escapes me right now. And before he was called up, they had ZERO black players....hmmm....in the new millenium...

The Mets HAVE white players...and more than a couple.

Did you know that in the early-mid-60's, he New York Mets (and other teams) had SEGREGATED Spring Training facilities? Did you know that many hotels did NOT allow black, black Latins and most latin players to check-in on their premises? Yeah, the players had to usually go to some less-than-flattering place. Tell me, how would YOU feel? My mother told me about talking the railroad to Virginia when she was a child and how her and her parents had to sit on the BACK of the railroad cars....And I'm talking about trains leaving New York.

Fact of the matter is that for too damn long...for a black and/or Latin to be the 25th man on a major league roster, the 'unwritten' rule was that he HAD to be BETTER than a white player targeted for that SAME 25th spot.

If you have a choice for a first baseman: one Latin, one white and one black...and if the Latin player is stats-wise, better...then that's who you go with. Period...

Much of this nonsense by a lot of whites has to do with that 'old boys' mentality. For too long folks get 'comfortable' with status quo---and once that's taken away...here comes the fear factor...and the RACE CARD (by some whites) comes up...please....

If folks understood the history of this country....and I mean REALLY understood...most of them would keep their mouths shut and realize the natural progression of things.

And people really want know why race relations are perpetually f***ed up in this country?

I'll say it again, in THIS country...RACE ALWAYS MATTERS.

I am not by any means indicting ALL or MOST whites, but I AM pointing to those who are guilty of this incorrect behavior. Shame on all of you all....

We can agree to disagree but I remember when Minaya was the GM in Montreal and the makeup of that team was very Latin. Of course the Expos unlike the Jays never stopped concentrating on the Hispanic/Latin markets but still it was noted even back then that Minaya concentrated more on Latin ballplayers then anything else.

It could very well be overplayed but the guy has a history of doing that kind of thing.

and to add: all one has to do is go to each and every team's web page on mlb.com, and you will find out that more teams OTHER THAN the Mets, have joint web pages in SPANISH also, including the Yankees.

So on the real, folks need to get a grip and get over it.

Geez, I wouldn't like that one bit. I know alot of people dislike Francesa and Russo, but I like them. And there would be nobody that could bring in the ratings they do.

Geez, I wouldn't like that one bit. I know alot of people dislike Francesa and Russo, but I like them. And there would be nobody that could bring in the ratings they do.

I don't care for 'em too much, but I admittedly listen to them just about every day in the office. If anything, it serves as background noise. They've lost some of their oomph lately, as neither one watches near the amount of sports that they should as sports talk hosts. You'll usually hear them talk about how they "didn't see" a big point of a game because they were in the car, or at a function or something... For the money they're being paid (somewhere around 1.3 and 1.4 million a year), I'd have three or four TVs set up in a home office or something, so I could be adequately informed for my show.

hey, you know most of the bull**** is media driven...and for those who can't connect the dots, they allow themselves to be panicked...

10 days ago, how many thought the Mets were dead? The way a lot of folks and some in the media were acting, you would have thought that the Mets had a worse record than Seattle...

Ahhh yes...and of course firing Willie is what has led the Phils to lose 8 out of 10 and get swept over the weekend by the Angels. I swear...
