The fact that JP hasn't been fired yet astounds me. He does deserve some credit for the constant stream of young, quality pitchers that seem to need to come up every two weeks or so, but the simple fact of that matter is that money was not allocated wisely. I don't want to criticise the Wells and Rios contracts too harshly because at the time the seemed like pretty good moves (although a little expensive on Wells), but the simple fact of the matter is that Ricciardi says one of the reasons they may move Doc is that he doesn't feel they have the resources to re-sign him and if you had any inkling that that may be the case going into it you should never have made those offers. A good but not great outfielder is far easier to find than the best freaking pitcher in baseball. The fact that he is signed through 2010 concerns me, though, because I'm not sure the headless Rogers really appreciates the Blue Jays and probably doesn't want to need to pay a second GM.
Now, I am not from Toronto, and this may be blasphemy to those of you who are, but I honestly believe the best thing that could happen to the Jays would be the on and off rumoured MLSE purchase of the team. They seem to have learned their lesson that they aren't sports people and need to stay the heck away from sports decisions, but they have no trouble pouring money into an endeavor which is exactly what the Jays need at this point. Based on their track record, I bet MLSE would have no problem paying two GMs, paying Doc whatever is necessary and doing what it takes to sign/trade for players to better the roster if they felt it would get them a contending team. And that is exactly what we all dream of at this point, isn't it?
