    2010 Boston Red Sox

I figured I would kick off this thread with a filthy highlight real of Adrian Beltre from 2006-2009 with the Mariners.

The man truly is a magician at 3rd. My jaw is still on the floor at some of these plays, and his arm is a canon.

Feel free to talk about all things Red Sox going into this year of baseball.

    Re: 2010 Boston Red Sox

I love Beltre defensively, but I'm admittedly a bit baffled at the decision if there is nothing bigger in the works for this lineup (which I fear there isn't). I know he's an injury risk, but I think Lowell was still serviceable (and if his range was so ill affected, he could have been swapped with Youk) and is a more reliable presence at the dish. Plus now they are essentially going to pay anywhere from $18-$21 million for third base (depending on whether or not Lowell is again traded).

Overall, they've seemingly took a lineup that had periods of power outages last year and didn't do anything to bolster it. I liked the Lackey signing, but I fear that the lack of any true consistent power threat in the middle of the order will hurt them down the stretch. I don't disagree with their belief that Bay wasn't worth that kind of money for the years he was asking, but it's a tough hole to fill. I'm skeptical on this offseason overall, but I've also learned to trust the management of this team's vision. So we'll see, I guess.

      Re: 2010 Boston Red Sox

Just remember, runs prevented is every bit as good as runs scored. A common philosophy in baseball since the dawn of time.

And they have that big time defensively.

Nothing is getting by on the left side in Fenway unless it is off the wall or over it. Ells in Left, Beltre a gem at 3rd, and Scuturo at third.

The left was week, and now is beefed up tremendously.

Lowell will be gone, and before August 1st there will be a trade for a big bat at a cheaper price I bet.

Beltre is an upgrade at 3rd, and he is a power hitting rightly who had a park that was horrible to righty's to play in. He will at least put up Lowell numbers hitting, and far better defensively. And will tattoo that wall all things considered.

The team so far is built for run prevention.

And it did not cost the Red Sox a draft pick since he was considered type B. It is a win/win.

        Re: 2010 Boston Red Sox

Yeah, I get all that. I understand the strategy, I just don't know that it fits as neatly as some think here. We'll see.

The Beltre deal will be a significant defensive upgrade over Lowell and the outfield is better in the field. As I said, my issue is with what they are paying for 3B this year, when the Beltre upgrade might not be significant enough defensively to be worth it (yes, they are going to trade Lowell, but they had to agree to eat 9 million of his salary just to gain interest earlier...I doubt that deal gets better). My question about the Beltre deal is the overall price they are spending vs what they'll get in return (and I don't know how much of a "power hitter" I consider him...but we'll see).

There are still too many questions IMO about the team. I don't hate their moves or anything, but I do have concerns about the threat our lineup will pose when it needs to be what carries the team. But hey, I'll be more than happy to have my concerns proven wrong...lol

I hear ya, it is definitely going to be a different set up team than that we are used to. Should be a fun and interesting season.

Definitely that. As I said, I've learned to try to trust this front office even when I don't completely understand/agree with their specific reasoning at the time. My guess is that Theo's still got something up his sleeve or is banking on something else down the line. Looking forward to it either way!

I just read this article today.

This makes perfect sense on how he says it. Everyone keeps saying get a bat, but WHO, who is on the market that will make a better defense behind your strong pitchers, and has pop, and is not a money sink?

There was just nobody worth it. And mid season as Epstein said, is much easier to get a bat than get good pitching. And he is right. Just too many armchair GMs out there, that didnt look at the whole picture (not you, but most of the comments in these articles all the time).

Yeah, I agree with that. As I said, as much as I wanted to keep Bay I was glad they didn't overextend for him just for that reason.

Glad to see him confirm my suspicions...lol...I honestly think he's still got his eyes on the Gonzalez prize. Mid-season, he might suddenly be available again and the only direction his price could really go is down I guess.

                  Bill James 2010 PROJECTIONS
This is very much an inexact science, as James readily admits. But it's fun to look at. Here are the key Red Sox:

                  Ellsbury: .302/.360/.420. 106 R, 64 SB
                  Pedroia: .307/.378/.465, 15 HR, 109 R, 75 RBI
                  Youkilis: .289/.394/.492, 23 HR, 98 R, 95 RBI
                  Martinez: .298/.377/.464, 19 HR, 97 RBI
                  Ortiz: .264/.369/.519, 29 HR, 99 RBI
                  Drew: .269/.385/.474, 22 HR, 76 RBI
                  Beltre: .269/.321/.439, 17 HR, 68 RBI
                  Cameron: .237/.328/.428, 23 HR, 74 RBI
                  Scutaro: .264/.347/.381, 10 HR, 57 RBI
                  Hermida: .267, 20 HR, 73 RBI
                  Varitek: .229, 9 HR

Now keep in mind that these projections were made right after the season and do not take into account players changing teams or leagues.

Notes: The Red Sox have a full 40-man roster. So if any non-roster players are deemed worthy of a spot, a corresponding move would have to be made to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. ... A few e-mailers asked whether it was a surprise that Ryan Westmoreland was not invited to camp. Not really. He is still young and will be taking it a little slow as he comes off shoulder surgery. He doesn't need the hype, either. ... It was a little surprising, however, that promising catching prospect Tim Federowicz was not invited. Teams often like exposing their young catchers to big-league pitching and Federowicz, who is 22, is advanced defensively. ... Fourteen of the top 30 prospects in the organization ranked by Baseball America were invited to camp.
