    Re: 2010 Pirates

i just don't see the knowledge behind drafting a player because they will be MLB ready sooner than other players. i think that the pirates should take machado and work with him as long as they need to. let them build up his strength, his arm, consistency, confidence, etc. in bradenton or wherever they want to put him. i think that the pirates can build their franchise around a guy like machado. he will be the best player we have in the organization in 5 years.

if we take taillon, then i would not be that mad either. taillon has unbelievable stuff and his command looks amazing. the high velocity is exactly what the pirates rotation needs. all we have are soft-throwing lefties. taillon will probly be our #1 guy in 4-5 years time. i'm just afraid of the hard-throwing righty coming out and blowing his shoulder or elbow out because of how hard he throws. the background for high school pitchers taken in pittsburgh is not good. yet i agree with you, taillon is on a complete different level than bullington and van benschoten. i guess we will see who they take. i plan on making a few responses to the draft myself.

Yeah, like I said, I don't think there is really a wrong pick. However, if you're under the assumption that you want to compete with the core of players that are here now, then you can conceivably imagine Taillon arriving before the next cycle of trades when the team starts to get pricey once Alvarez/Cutch/and crew are getting closer to free agency.

I can't really envision Machado getting here before that time.

looks like its taillon. i think that its gonna wind up being a great pick, but i still wish that it was machado. as i said before, taillon is probly gonna be our #1 guy in a few years.

From what I've read, Taillon, who obviously projects to the front end of the staff, also has a plus character makeup. After reading about his family's academic background, he may also project to have Ohlendorf level of intelligence. With that being said, I think I've read too much about the draft tonight. I like the Taillon pick. Three MLB caliber pitches already and the changeup in the near future is definitely encouraging.

Bucs selected Stetson Allie with the second round pick. So the Bucs took the two hardest throwers in the draft. Plus he hit a broken bat HR in High School.

I think Neal Huntington and Co. killed it in the Draft for the third straight year. Now they have to get Jameson and Stetson signed.

Eventually they can bring up Tabata , then move Jones to first. They have to move Milledge out of the three hole, I would guess Alvarez is their future 3 hole hitter.

Strasburg is amazing. Now moving on...I'm looking forward to tomorrow's debut of Lincoln. Also, with Jeff Clement optioned to Indy, it is speculated that we might also see the arrival of Jose Tabata to the PBC.

Side note....I hope AAA will get Clement's bat going; he seemed to play a solid first base in Pittsburgh.

Yeah, 14 K's in his major league debut was pretty amazing. Hopefully Lincoln can at least have a solid start in his debut tonight

Lincoln AND Tabata making their debuts tomorrow (assuming the game happens, weather could put a damper on that).

Good to see Lincoln/Tabata making their debuts.

I think the Pirates did well in the draft again. Their scouts for the draft are heads and tails above the scouts at the MLB level. Drafting has gone well, trades/free agent pickups have been pretty poor overall outside of a few players for Huntington and crew.

Stetson will be interesting. He's going to be a VERY tough signing as he's got first round talent, but fell to the 2nd round. If he goes to college and stays healthy, he could be an early first round pick. Definitely a risk for him to do that, but also one that could net him a significantly larger paycheck.

EDIT: Lincoln just gave up a HR to Dunn. Crushed a FB.

lincoln pitched alrite for his debut. his stuff looked a little ecstatic at times but otherwise it could have been a lot worse. tabata looked pretty good, and then he injured his hamstring or whatever. just the pirates luck. lastings looked good in RF except for that one play where he misplayed the ball. he also hit the ball good. garrett jones looked good tonite too. i really hope tabata can shake off the cramps.

It was just a cramp for Tabata, he's fine.

I thought Lincoln looked OK... He was better than his line, but still struggled spotting his fastball at times and we rarely saw the hammer curve that he's known for. I saw a few really nice changeups, but he was pretty inconsistent with that as well.

I was glad to hear that Tabata's injury was only a cramp. I thought he played well last night.
