My first season as a baseball fan, and I am excited for opening day. This is why I wish baseball started in May though. Absolutely HATE seeing baseball in cold weather.

Me too. This is a topic for another thread but they really need to start the season in mid-April, play scheduled DH's, play only 152 games or so, and make sure the World Series is done by mid-October at the latest. They'll never do that though.

Anyway, I have tickets to the game Saturday but may have to get rid of them. Might have other plans that would trump the game.

        Re: 2011 Cincinnati Reds

Really looking forward to more thrills and chills out of the Reds this season! Glad Votto is finally being recognized as one of the best in baseball and the Reds are getting respect (well earned) again! Here's hoping for another NL Central title, and better yet, some playoff wins. I have a feeling we're in the midst of something special in Cincy. Having seen firsthand the Phillies finally break through and get their championship, I'm drawing a lot of parallels. Couple of really good home grown players, sprinkle in some veterans, an extremely deep arsenal of pitchers and a city that's hungry for baseball and a championship. Go Reds!

I still dont think they get as much credit or recognition that they should get.
Just this moring on Mike and Mike Orel Hershiser kind of gave his baseball preview for the year. Well when they talked about the NL Central he said he really liked the Brewers. After mentioning the Brewers he they talked about the Cards and Cubs but they didnt even mention the Reds. How do you not even mention the defending division champs??!
Also watching the MLB network the other night 3 of the 5 guys picked the Cards to win and the other two picked the Brewers.

I like when my team flies under the radar. As a buccaneer fan, it makes winning that much more enjoyable.

Wow, no mention of the Reds? That's just naive, honestly. Not even being a homer here. We won the division last year, have largely the same roster, plus all the experience, plus the continued development of all the young guys, and still, no love. It's going to be a hell of a competition between likely us, the Brewers, and Cardinals. But whatever, if they don't want to even recognize us, that's fine. We'll just have to prove 'em wrong... again. Makes me love this bunch even more.

I dont agree at all with cutting down the number of games but maybe they should schedule more double headers in order to wrap up the WS sooner. Really all that is wrong with baseball & really perfect solutions that make everyone happy are contained in the book "Fair Ball" by Bob Costas. Its an excelent read that i would recommend to any sports fan.

I'll be down Saturday as well. I absolutly love that they're making "Opening Night" special as well with a lot of events for yahoos like myself who can't get in the doors for Opening Day. If you google "Reds Opening Weekend" the first hit will take you tto all the festivites that are going on (I couldnt get a link to work)

Really though we're not going to sneak up on anyone beside maybe the media. Those in baseball know The Reds are as real as it gets. One GM has been quoted "The Reds may be the single biggest favorite in any division going into the season."

Edit: Also I just thought of this... ESPN doesnt give a s**t about anything that doesnt happen in NY, Boston, LA, or Dallas

I just watched a thing the other day explaining why more DH's would never work to make the season shorter. More DH's with the same amount of off days would throw off every teams pitching rotation. You would have more pitcher injuries and would need a 6 man rotation.

                      Re: 2011 Cincinnati Reds

As slickdtc mentioned, the Reds have largely the same roster as last year. I imagine that is part of the reason the reds are getting no play. I mean, look at all the regulars, they are all the same as last year. Rotataion is the same (obviously there will be some changes with injury, but all the guys filling in will have been with the reds last year). Lost Rhodes in the pen, didn't get any big name to replace him (not saying they need to either), have Chapman who can hopefully step up.

But look at the Brewers, they added two big arms. That brings media attention, creates buzz.

Cardinals big move (in terms of media) was they added Berkman and lost Wainwright to injury.

Cubs added Carlos Pena, Matt Garza, brought Wood back.

I'm with you guys here, they should be getting attention but I guaruntee it has to do with the lack of "big" acquisitions. This team won 91 games last season, returned just about every big component of the team (minus Rhodes), so they should hopefully continue that success.

Now I won't say it's a slam dunk for the Reds, the Brewers most definitely look like they could contend. Although St. Louis lost Wainwright, I think they'll be in the race. The Cubs, as some of you might know I am also a big Cubs fan too, but I just don't see it happening. Obviously we all know anything can happen with injuries and players underperforming (or possibly suprising and breaking out) but the Reds definitely have a legitimate shot at repeating. They just probably won't get too much hype in the media because they didn't do anything big to improve the team, instead they stuck with basically last years roster, which was a 91 win team.

I read that when it first came out. Great book. Totally agree. I think my copy got lost in a lending web somewhere years ago. I'd like to read it again though.

I acctually listened to it on my iPod but it translates just fine. One of those books (like the one in my signiture) where all the proposed changes would do nothin gbut make the game better and you're sitting there pulling your hair out saying "WHY DONT THEY DO IT THIS WAY!!!"

I thought the best part was that Costas doesnt go around just saying they need a salary cap but makes sure to come up with an actual solution that satisfies all parties.

That man should be the commish.

Opening day is closing in! Sitting here at the Westin with my wife getting ready hopefully for a win against the Brewers. My first Reds game ever and been a fan my whole life. saw some of the Brewer players as they are staying in the Westin where I am. Its been a amzing time getting drunk with Reds fans waiting for tomorrow to come. I sure hope we beat them badly tomorrow.
