Yeah, but he can get ABs just fine against AAA pitching, which has proven to be quite a challenge for him to figure out so far. It's a balance between not breaking his confidence and getting him the most relevant experience possible. Again, there's no need to rush him at all. The 500 PA per level philosophy has served Theoyer well in the past. We don't need a Rizzo-type situation where he gets rushed, develops bad habits and needs to get sent back down anyway. If a prospect is not ready to compete at a certain level, it makes no sense to get him what amounts to a hollow, demoralizing experience being there.

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
As for the Addison/Baez/Castro debate....the problem is easily solved in only one of two ways, i think...
1)Bryant moves to OF (I know I've said this a million times, sorry...) You could then put Baez at third, Addison at SS (he's the best glove, unless i'm mistaken), and Castro at 2B where he would still have value but a little less responsibility...
OR
2) Trade one of em...Baez seems way too "electric" to trade...so I'd prefer one of the other two...
A couple years ago, someone suggested moving Barney to SS and Castro to 2B...I still think that was one of the best ideas I'd heard. It was when Castro was a space cadet...
And I think he's the wild card here...When it's all said and done, and Bryant and Baez are up with the big club, there's no room for him in the middle of the order. There's also going to be speculation about "who, if anyone" is going to be traded out of the over-ripe crop of IFers...as we are already speculating...there will also likely be talk about position switching...and being removed from SS is a demotion, in any situation.
So, we have a player, with lots of positives, but a history of a slightly unreliable mentality, who will perhaps be facing some kind of adversity...I don't think any of us should be surprised if he were to flake out in some way as a result of all the potential upheaval. I'm just saying the likelihood of him imploding seems higher than average.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Castro is controlled for many years to come, is a young upcoming star, and has improved drastically at ss. We are not trading this kid. Russell will play 2nd or 3rd and Baez opposite. Reports say Russell has decent footwork, which I can agree with after watching some games. He has an average arm, and good range. His hands are his only plus defensively. He's a perfect second baseman. Castro is our shortstop.

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Of the 4, I'd MUCH rather have Russell and Castro.
Baez is electric, but there are major holes in his swing. Reason why so far in like 78 at bats, he's striking out nearly every other at bat. Just to put this in perspective, let's say Baez was an every day player from the beginning of the season and played all 162 games, striking out at his current rate getting to the plate 650 times (and that might be under how many at bats he gets in a full season) he'd break Mark Reynolds strikeout record by more than 20 Ks.
Now, I know he has plenty of room to grow and what we've seen is a small sample size, but if you change his swing, what does that do to him? You have him change his plate philosophy, how does that affect him as a hitter? Look at what Sveum did to Castro in one year. Had people really thinking Castro needed to be shipped out of town. I think you are going to have to take the good with the bad with Baez.
I personally think Russell is going to end up being the best out of them all. There are guys you watch, and you just know they have it. He is one of them. Great hands, solid power, great arm at short. I do agree I think he moves to second, but of the 4, those are the two I'm keeping.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

I think Baez will grow much like Rizzo did. Now I don't expect the patience Rizzo has but it's not impossible for guys to change their approach and be successful. I personally want all of them. I want to see us spend our money on pitching and let these bats mature and grow into a dangerous lineup. Our lineup with Castro, Rizzo, Baez, Bryant, Soler, Alcantara, Castillo, Coughlan, Ruggiano, etc next year could be fun to watch.

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Kris Bryant just hit his 21st AAA homer. That's 43 on the season. Does anyone know at what time the Cubs have to wait until calling him up next year so they don't burn a year of service? If it's not until late April or early May, and he starts right out of camp, then why not just call him up now?Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I totally disagree with this. If he makes the Cubs out of ST next year, which is VERY likely, then aren't they burning that year anyway??
There's NOTHING left for him to prove at Iowa. If I was Kris or his family, I'd be really pissed off right now.Comment

I'd be surprised if he makes the club out of ST next year. They'll do what they can to keep that extra year of (relatively) cheap service.Comment
