The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I don't even know where to start about how excited I am for next year. Not saying they're making the playoffs or anything like that, but they'll be super-fun to watch.
Been going to games since I was a little kid in the late 70's. Been a long time, boys!
OMG! Alcantara!!! Dude has sneaky power!!Comment

I think I'm just going to get all of their lineup aside from Castillo next year.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Love this quote from Javy Baez about last night's game per ESPN:
"I was just trying to make contact," Baez said. "I think that's my greatest at-bat since I came up."
THAT is the ticket. Just 'making contact' will give Baez 25-35 HRs per season easily.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Castro is out for the rest of the year with a high ankle sprain. Honestly can't say I feel bad for him when he doesn't even know how to perform a decent slide.
Rizzo might get shelved also.
Not a huge deal. These guys can get their rest and prepare for huge season next year.
I wouldn't be surprised if the make a playoff push in 2015.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I'm just happy that it wasn't as serious as Castro made it look right after the slide. The way he was grabbing his knee scared the **** out of me at first.
Silver lining here is that we should have no problem finishing out the season with a protected first round pick in the draft, leaving us free to aimlessly throw money around this offseason.Comment

I wish we were able to see Rizzo for a good portion with these guys but yeah no big deal. Just glad Castro is okay. Could of been much worse than the 4 weeks. Great bounceback season from Castro, he's only going to get better.
But next season should be fun.Wolverines Packers Cubs Celtics

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Castro has brought a lot of the "hate" upon himself.
He was hitting well over .300 since the break...but it's going to take a solid season of production and focus to break the image of being either "lackadaisical" or "unfocused."
It's hard to argue with his numbers this year...perhaps it is a matter of managing expectations...the projection of Castro as a .300/20hr hitter are probably not going to pan out.
He will likely never be disciplined at the plate (100ks this season, 35BB)...
It will be easier to like him when he is nowhere near the middle of the order...6th or 7th, less pressure...just make contact. Maybe then he can focus on defense. Baserunning is probably not going to be his strength.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

without walking you could tell his approach was much better this year. And the line he put up this year + 14 HR's and 33 Doubles. You will take that with developing power going forward. The Mental errors were so few this year that the unfocused and other critiques of him were just dumb.
I'll take .292/.339/.438 and live with a few mental errors everyday going into the future.Wolverines Packers Cubs Celtics

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
How is .300 and 20 HR out of the realm of possibilities? Not yet 25, he was hitting .280-.295 most of the year and even without playing the last month will finish with 14 HR. I'd say .300 and 20 HR is right in his wheelhouse.
No one deserves "hate" to be brought on them in terms of getting injured. It's just bad of people to say insensitive stuff when guys get hurt playing the game. You slide hundreds of times and something is bound to go wrong on one of them, it's just people's jaded lens of seeing it through that makes them say stuff like he doesn't know how to slide or he brought it on himself.
It's not right to blame Welington Castillo either, but HE was the one telling Castro to get down even though the ball was being cut. Starlin got caught in between a little.
I hope we keep Starlin Castro through the duration of his contract and that he retires as a Cub. I don't see anything wrong with him or how he plays the game. It's just that when he messes up, it's a BIG DEAL. When another guy admires his hit off the bat and ends up at 1st on a ball off the wall or gets picked off, you just don't hear about it, but it happens all the time.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment
