Doubt that will happen. He has an incredibly undesirable contract that makes him virtually untradeable in 3-4 years. Don't see it being the MO of this front office to get locked in on handcuffing high dollar long term deals. Especially when it would cost some farm depth and with Bryant's arrival on the horizon. Maybe if Hendry was still running the show.

Apparently people in baseball aren't happy with Joe Maddon after they thought he went after Rick's job and thought it was classless

I think that's just stupid as i bet the Cubs called Joe first and wanted to manage him and they did tell him that they were going for Joe

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

I'm willing to bet the Cubs approached him first...whether it was before or after he resigned from TB, idk...

I imagine once his TB GM split for LA, he decided he might leave...and apparently Theo's wanted the guy for a while.

The only thing that makes this stink is the Renteria issue...guy did a pretty good job, and was well-liked...I hope this isn't a greed issue that brings on some negative kharma...but you can't say no to Maddon. If there's one manage in baseball worth this kind of thing, it's him.

It may look bad in it's own way...but who do you want steering this ship? Renteria may be a great manager, but this team is built to win immediately (next 1-4 years), and Renteria is just closing the book on his very first year as a big-league manager. Could he do the job? sure....but none of "the kids" have had long relationships with him (maybe Rizzo, when he was in SD, but idk if RR was there)...and I don't want the team to gamble with him if someone like Maddon is available...

if this was Girardi or Yost or anyone else not named Bochy...it's a different story
          Australian Rules Football...just sayin'

Whenever you hear/read this, just replace people in baseball with Tampa Ray.

That's just butthurt from them that he left.

No…Buster Olney reported today that a lot of GM's in baseball are saying they don't like how this was handled and they expect MLB to investigate the Cubs for tampering. It isn't just the Rays.

Now I havent read anything today, but the key phrase in use in the last week was rival executives which just screams tampa sources to me.

Yes…I saw that too and it may very well be Tampa, but this is what I saw released this afternoon:

"Late Friday afternoon Olney reported that several executives believe the Rays would investigate a tampering issue if the Cubs hired Maddon."

It didn't say anything about rival executives which made me think it was others...

Yeah this seems more like an across the board MLB thing to me. I feel like the people in Tampa aren't TOO worked up. You can make the case once Friedman left that Maddon was hedging towards saying bye to the franchise. Tampa also gives off a vibe of an organization that won't be all butthurt about these things but this hiring does kind of stink. The Cubs should've done the right thing and fired Renteria before "officially" making the play for Maddon.

I've never seen so many people concerned with a manager/coach feelings to this degree. I get the human side a bit but I think this is overboard. Also Theo gave such a detailed timeline of the Maddon thing was for the tampering angle imo.

MLB is going to investigate the Cubs for tampering. If it holds up true that the Cubs did in fact tamper TB could be awarded any of the Cubs top prospects such as Addison Russell or Javier Baez. The Rays would be able to pick whatever player(s) they so choose. This is what the Rays could ask for, but doesn't necessarily mean they'll get it, but it is possible. Via Ken Rosenthal

Even ignoring the extreme unlikelihood that anything is proven, they will not get a top prospect from Chicago.

If Epstein really did refuse to speak to Maddon's agent until the commissioner confirmed that Maddon had opted out, there's nothing to see here, and I highly doubt Epstein would be dragging the commissioner into the story like he did if that isn't how it actually played out.

Sounds like sour grapes from teams/GMs that wanted a shot at him, but feel they didn't get a fair shake.

As already stated, Theo's timeline was so detailed, this will be disproven quickly and we can move on to talking about next season.

Also, it was great getting cheap Cubs tickets while they lasted lol. -_-
