Well the average ticket price was expensive, but that is because the box and lower bowl seating is so overpriced. But depends on your definition of cheap. If I can pay 90 bucks, sit in the lower bowl against a good opponent, I consider that cheap. Especially when I was paying 170-180 a piece for those same seats in 08-09.

They had great deals all year on bleacher/patio seats and some of the upper bowl seating. Price drops that were carried over from 2013. They have already announced that tickets will be going up next season and can only imagine how much those lower bowl tickets will be going for now.

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

I went to 5 games this past year and probably spent $150 total on tickets. Averaging $30 per visit, I sat in some pretty decent seats. I'd consider that very cheap.

Heck, I probably spent twice that amount in gas on the 4 hour drive there and back each time.

The Cubs should've done the right thing and fired Renteria before "officially" making the play for Maddon.
I am watching ESPN Monday NFL wrap-up and see on the bottom line scroll. MLB is investigating the Cubs for tampering. I knew this was coming. Maddon up and quit the Rays. He said, "for the first time he was going to get the money he wanted". The only problem was the only MLB Manager position opened was with the Twins and that was all. All of sudden the Cubs fired their guy who has two years left on his deal.

@ the original post, YES they should've fired their coach first. That's the Cubs though. Theo should know better..

"That's the Cubs though" what does that even mean?

Anyway, just because we didn't "do the right thing" and fire Renteria first doesn't mean there was tampering on our end. With how open Theo and our guys have been, I have a hard time believing that this investigation is going to dig up much at all.

Also if they fire Rick first before talking to Joe Maddon and if he would have said no or the Cubs didn't offer enough money then the Cubs would of needed to get a manager anyway. Plus I remember somewhere the agent said Theo wanted permission from the League office too

I am in the mindset that the Rays are angry that Joe left

Very much so. Blaming another team sounds a lot better to the average fan than just saying that we let one of the best managers in the game walk away.

IIRC, I read that Maddon's agent said that they had talked to 5 or so teams. Subtract one, because obviously we talked to him and that leaves 4 teams (3 if Minnesota is included) that already had a manager and contacted Maddon in some way. If every one of those teams would have "done the right thing" before looking into Maddon, there would be 3 or 4 teams right now without a manager and in a pretty ****ty situation.

The Cubs have announced they have acquired infielder Tommy La Stella from the Braves for right-hander Arodys Vizcaino. The two teams …

Today we shipped three meaningless international bonus slots and Arodys Vizcaíno back to the Braves for 2B Tommy La Stella.

Bringing in La Stella doesn't mean Castro's gone, IMO, Luis Valbuena is just as likely to be dealt. La Stella will be a cheap, high OBP depth piece. I have no clue if he can play more than 2B, but he'll be fairly valuable if he can fill that utility role. Plus, he has an option an can be sent back down to AAA if need be.

I just can't wrap my head around us getting rid of Castro if we're serious about competing in 2015. Unless we're getting an absolute haul, it doesn't make any sense to trade Starlin until Russell/Baez are proving that they can play at a high level at Wrigley.

Rumors continue to swirl about the Cubs pursuing Russell Martin.

Personally this supposed deal reeks of the stench of the moves Hendry used to make. Overpaying aging position players coming off of career years and locking them in for way too long. Hope the Dodgers swoop in and take Martin off the market. Castillo is very good defensively and is great with the pitching staff. Not sure a change is needed there.

Stay the course and go after pitching, pitching and more pitching.

Castro isn't going anywhere. Not with the level of production you get for that team friendly contract. If they do deal him, as you said they better get a haul, and even then I still wouldn't be a fan of it. I still believe Baez will be the odd man out. Especially as Russell continues to progress through the ranks.

Yeah, this is kinda where I'm at, although I'm not against signing Russell Martin, and I'm not sure this was really a career year for him. I seem to remember one of his year's with the Dodgers being his career year. Pretty sure he won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger the same year back when he played for them.

Anyways, I like Martin a lot... it would depend on the contract.

But I agree that I think Baez is likely the odd-man out if somebody is getting dealt for a top notch pitcher.

I'm completely fine with signing Martin at that price, even if say he regresses offensively he's still a above average catcher and with his defense and elite framing skills. It's a risk but the risk is with his injury history. But he's such a big improvement over Wellington Castillo it's worth it.

I thought at 1st the Tommy La Stella move was maybe something more but maybe with a team that's going to strikeout a bunch they wanted a guy who hits Lefty and has solid OBP skills.

Regarding the La Stella trade... can someone explain the impact of the international slots that we traded/acquired? Or is there really an impact? lol

La Stella seems like a nice complement to Baez if we roll with them as our 2B.

I'm pretty sure that since we went wild with the international guys (Eloy, Gleyber, Tseng) we were limited in what we could do this year due to the overspending. That made those slots virtually useless for us.

Talks with Martin are in the 4/64 range. I honestly don't care either way. Martin is an upgrade, but if we don't get him there are other options (Wieters is a FA next year, and we can always trade for someone). I wouldn't be opposed to give Welly another chance to get the bat going.

Edit: looks like the Jays are getting Martin for "McCann money" thankfully we sat out on that one.

I don't know if it's time to "go for it", but...

I would be thrilled to see Lester and Brandon McCarthy sign with the Cubs.

I'm not sure if they can really spend that much right now, but whatever.

                              I want a sinker-ball pitcher...McCarthy, please.
It also seems Lester has other options he would prefer...lives outside of Atlanta...liked Boston...hard to say if Chicago can offer anything comparable, other than Theo lol

I don't mind missing out on Martin. Castillo can only improve, right?

Andrew Miller? Why not splash for a historically good reliever?

                                Re: Miller

Someone's going to overpay for him and I don't think that it will/should be us. Robertson wants a deal similar to Papelbon and Miller probably shouldn't be too far off that. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have Miller at the back end of our bullpen, but I don't think we'll shell out the money for it. Hoyer's already said we're content with Rondon and our bullpen. We'll probably add a lesser lefty to the mix, if anything.

Right now, Lester is at the top of my want list. Next year's crop of FA pitchers is nice too, so I'm not as worried as most people about it. If we get him, awesome, but if we don't, move on. Pitchers are going to continue to get paid outrageous money, so I think if we want him, we'll get him. Not being comfortable with the price tag is an okay excuse for letting Russ Martin walk, but Lester, not so much.

I'd also love to see Hammel return. Lester, Arrieta, Hammel, Hendricks, Wada/Wood/Turner/whoever would make a pretty solid rotation.
