Could have been a pinch hit or double switch that yanked Lester. Maybe his spot came up to hit in the top of the 7th. Still don't like it.

So Lester had 105 pitches through 7 IP and his spot came up in the Cubs 8th. Jon Herrera pinch hit for him and struck out. I guess it's not a terrible strategic move in a 2 run game on the road and with Lester having that many pitches and being known to suddenly lose it in the later innings this year. The move just kind of blew up in Maddon's face.

Needed that win. Not a good one to lose. The psychological benefit to this race would have been huge.

I also read the box score wrong. Strop came in for Lester, then Richard for Strop. That makes much more sense to me.

I also wonder if the Cardinals have a tip on Strop, or something. They've hit him really well all season, and seem to be the only team that consistently does.

Come to think of it, they've probably hacked into the Astros' database and found some advanced stuff on Strop. It's all starting to make sense...

7 innings, 1 ER. Might get one more out of him but the pitch count is getting up there.

Keep doing what you do Jake.

Now 19-6 and lowered the 'ol ERA down to 1.99.

                    Hear those footsteps, Greinke?

EDIT: Looks like the Schwarb is back for Game 2 of the double dip.

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

These Cubs are a revelation this year (82-58) playing .586 ball.

4th best record in baseball (1 GB KC for 3rd).

6 GB best team in baseball.

6 GB NL Central, 2 GB 1st Wild Card, +9.5 games on 2nd Wild Card.

3rd in NL in HRs, 2nd in NL in BBs taken

5th in NL in ERA, 1st in NL in K's, 5th in NL in BBs, 1st in NL in BAA

Most road wins in the NL (39).

The NL ROY frontrunner (Bryant: .271/.368/.491, .858 OPS, 24 HR 90 RBI 12 SB, 135 wRC+, good defense at 3B, LF, and RF, 5.4 fWAR)

A strong NL Cy Young candidiate (Arrieta: 19-6, 1.99 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 5.9 fWAR).

                      A fringe NL MVP candidate (Rizzo: .282/.390/.531, .921 OPS, 29 HR, 88 RBI 15 SB, 150 wRC+, 5.0 fWAR)

A probable NL Manager of the Year (Maddon: 82-58 actual record vs 76-64 Pythagorean record, probable to win 20+ more games than in 2014)

A few solid veteran pickups in Dexter Fowler (.254/.349/.432, 17 HR 42 RBI 17 SB, 3.2 fWAR), Miguel Montero (.243/.345/.429, 15 HR 49 RBI, 2.0 fWAR), and Jon Lester (9-10, 3.50 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 4.1 fWAR).

A couple of impressive rookies aside from the impending ROY (Bryant) in Addison Russell (.241/.300/.400, 13 HR 46 RBI 2 SB, plus plus defense at 2B and SS, 2.0 fWAR) and Kyle Schwarber (.267/.362/.570, .932 OPS, 15 HR 41 RBI 3 SB, 151 wRC+, solid defense in LF, 1.8 fWAR, one epic slip at rounding first on a homerun trot)

This team deserves to play in a playoff series and almost certainly would if they didn't play in the NL Central. Even so, this is the most entertaining Cubs squad since the Wood/Prior/Sosa era teams.

I feel as confident as can be with a possible Wild Card game with Jake on the mound. Especially against the Pirates, who he has dominated in his 2 years with Chicago. I am so pumped for this last month of the season and the impending playoffs.

Richard did a great job today and it sucks that he gave up that one run when he did.

Shouldn't have split the series with this joke of a phillies team.

The one game play-in still irks me. So, if you win, you can't use your Ace until, what? Game 3, at best? though Probably game 4.

It seems so off the cuff and runs against the spirit of the competition, imo.

Also aside from Lester and Arrieta the rotation hasn't been good especially Jason Hammel

Will be a travesty if Arrieta gets to 20 wins, with an ERA under 2 and a no hitter in tow and doesn't win the Cy Young.
