Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

Well Baez is the one thing we've actually agreed on, like, ever but the head case thing I agree is a bit much. I think it's more so he has been programmed that way for so long, that it's going to be a long road for him to be consistently successful at the big league level and for him to really absorb the changes in philosophy.

I personally think he is never going to get there. Just too many obstacles to overcome IMO. The swing is the biggest hurdle. I know he's only 22, but we saw the same thing happen to Brett Jackson, who in reality was much closer to ML ready than Baez is at this state. With LaStella being a reliable on base guy and Alcantara being worlds ahead at the plate and in the field, I'm guessing he'll probably start the year at Iowa and we probably won't hear much from him again for some time.

I'm quietly excited to see La Stella. I'm a sucker for patient hitters that just find ways to get on base.

I would LOOOOOVE to eat crow on Baez. It's just that we have enough power hitting. I guess we can't change who he is though.

I don't think they'll change his swing, but he can adjust his approach for sure. That's easier said than done, but I'm hopeful he can figure it out because he might become the most exciting hitter in baseball.

Despite the lackluster outcome of the Fukudome acquisition, the effect he had on the lineup early on that year was very noticeable.

Everyone followed his lead at the plate, the whole team seemed more patient at the plate.

Every lineup needs a patient hitter or three.

It's just a matter of whether he can be an Adam Dunn or Alfonso Soriano...

If he can rake 30+ HRs, someone will give him several chances to do that....see Jose Hernandez.

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

Maybe some Cubs fans can help me out here. I'm going to start a new MLB 14 franchise with the Cubs to carry over to 15 (once I finish the roster I'm working on). My question is what exactly do you guys think their infield situation will be? Got to figure Mike Olt will platoon with someone until Bryant comes up. 2B I'm hearing a platoon situation is possible with Baez and either LA Stella/Alcantara. So really I want to know how I should set my lineup and what players will play what positions.

My guess is that Baez gets the majority of the time at 2B, and La Stella/Olt platoon at 3B if Bryant doesn't make the OD roster. Alcantara will play a little of everywhere, giving guys a day off when needed, or move in if someone is in an extended slump

Digging a little deeper on the Internet the reaction from Cubs players on the Manny hiring has been very positive... Not saying all great hitters are great hitting coaches, but it seems Mannys time in Iowa left a good impression with the younger cubs hitters. He seems to relate well with them.

I also like the fact that he will not travel with team, but rather, just work with the team about once per month during home stands.

So it's official that Lester is starting opening night.

Are we taking bets who is his catcher that night?? lol

We had this conversation a couple months ago, and I said Ross will catch him opening night. I stand by that. I think I was the only one.
