And btw, if Kris Bryant and his daddy wanted to get paid before those 7 years they can sign a deal.

    But Boras wont allow it.
Don't you EVER read my blog? It's gotten a lot better.

If he's getting paid at 29/30, the end of the contract will be like every other huge deal in baseball.

There is just so much that can happen over 5 years. I don't agree with the idea of holding him out now when it really seems like he's ready, in order to benefit in 2021.

The only way Bryant signs a MEGA deal before he's a free agent, is if he fetches somewhere in the range of what Stanton got.

The question is: do the Cubs actually go there??

Boras can't tell them what to do. Kris has ALL the leverage.

Yeah, you don't know that for a fact.. And I seriously doubt the Yankees or Red Sox would pull this stuff.

Possibly.. or what Trout got. Or Kershaw. Again, I would rather the Cubs pay him while he can produce enough to earn it over paying him for what he did in the past, when he can no longer do it in the present.

It's this type of thought process that makes people wonder if they won't 'fight' for him when it's time for him to get paid. That's the whole point of this discussion.

Everyone understands the whole point of waiting 2 weeks. It's what happens 6/7 years from now that Cubs fans are worried about.

                  I'll leave it at this:

If the Ricketts Family already told Theo and Jed that they're not going to even entertain the idea of a constant $160/$170+ yearly million dollar payroll(renovations or not) or one player making $250+ million, then I completely understand why they're doing this.

Otherwise, nobody has any clue what ceiling the Cubs will reach for a yearly payroll right now and how it affects certain player(s).

It's unfortunate that Boras is his agent.

Would ideally like to see them offer a deal like they did to Rizzo and Castro, where in the 3rd/4th year of control offer him a 6-7 year extension at a reduced price before he ever gets to the open market.

Nothing worse than getting in a bidding war for a player you already had on your roster.

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

“We’re told we can go out there and win a spot,” Bryant said. “I really took that to heart at the beginning of the spring. I really came out here with a chip on my shoulder and really wanted to play as hard as I can.”

So I guess we shouldn't say anything bad about Theo pertaining to this, right?

EDIT: This is the type of crap I'm worried about. They're already butting heads.

Kris Bryant defended agent Scott Boras' comments after Boras criticized the Cubs for their potential handling of his star client.

Butting heads is a little strong. It's hard to not get caught up in all of the speculation, but there are still 2 weeks left in ST.. I'm gonna let it play out

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

I see both sides of the coin for sure, and sometimes have mixed feelings on how this should be handled but I think in this case the Cubs are in the wrong if they hold him down for those 9 games.

First reason being is that the Cubs are anything but a small market team. If Bryant really is as good as he appears to be, that extra year of control will not matter because they will want to lock him up for big money regardless before he ever gets to the open market. On the flip side if you find out he is the right handed Micah Hoffpauir, then you don't care about that extra year and you let him walk or trade him before it ever gets to that point.

Secondly, those 9 games could potentially matter. I don't think it is out of the question to think that the Cubs could be contending for one of those Wild Card spots this year and it brings me back to just 5 years ago with the Braves and the Jason Heyward situation. They also had the option to hold Heyward out until they gained an extra year of control but they chose to bring him up. In those first 10 games (which he wouldn't have played if they kept him in Triple A), he hit .316 and had an OPS of over 1.000 and the Braves eventually made the playoffs by one game over the Padres. And that was a move made by one of the more frugal teams in baseball.

If the Cubs are serious about being a player in the NL Central now, they will think twice about those 9 games. Just my two cents.

Your 3rd paragraph is why this also sucks. People really think Bryant won't make a difference in 9 games?? C'mon.

No not really. Unless you think he's Mike Trout in those 9 games.

I get wanting Bryant on the Opening Day roster. Everyone wants that.

What I dont get is why you are losing your **** because Scott Boras says he wants his client to get paid. That's his job. There's no breaking news there.

You said you understand why Bryant has to be in Iowa, so then why the Chicken Little act?
