What are they needing to "mask"? I'm not understanding the logic or thought process here.

If he doesn't break with the club, the minute they can call him up, they will do so. There is no incentive for the Cubs to delay his arrival longer than the rule dictates.

They mask that they are really sending him down to delay his service time. I'm sure they don't want to outright say, "We want another year of control, so while Bryant is ready, we're going to send him to AAA so he can't be a free agent for another year."

They would be masking the obvious; that he's sent down strictly for an extra year of control. Which is garbage. That isn't debatable. Again, I understand the logistics of it, but it's still stupid. And the whole thing just reeks.

I'm just not sure if Theo wants to feel any heat from the MLBPA. Or maybe he just doesn't care, which is fine also.

Just curious to see how they wind up handling all this.

Well, everyone has made it clear that the rule is incredibly stupid including Theo, so I have no doubt that he will spit on it some more by calling him up the minute they can do so.

I don't think he cares about perception. He wants to win. Again, there is no incentive to leave him down any longer than they have to if he doesn't break with the team. I would think leaving him down any longer than necessary would only further upset Bryant's camp.

Exactly. If Theo has nothing to worry about, or he won't be intimidated by the MLBPA, then just come out with it. Say you're sending him down because of this specific reason, or let him break camp with the big club.

Theo made a mistake by telling him he could win a spot. He should've known better.

Trying to act like they are sending him there to work on things would be more insulting then just calling a spade a spade and being honest about wanting another year of control.

Guy has been the best player this spring in all of baseball by a mile. No one is buying that poo poo platter of nonsense if the Cubs try and serve it up and I think Theo is smart enough not to.

I don't think when Bryant said he was told that, he meant he was told directly. I'm guessing he got that from a general "Everyone here can win a spot" speech that was given to all players at the start of Spring Training.

Anyway, this all seems stupid. If Bryant turns out to be the player everyone thinks he will be, he's going to command a ridiculous number in that last year of arbitration regardless if it's 4 years or 5 years from now. I can't imagine the Cubs signing him to a contract that gives him significantly less than he would make in arbitration anyway, so this all seems a moot point in regards to saving money.

If he turns out to be just an okay player, the extra year of control won't end up mattering.

Exactly what I said a couple of pages ago.

4 years is plenty of time to find out how valuable the guy is going to be at the big league level. If he's as good as advertised, you shell out the money as you should, and if he's Micah Hoffpauir 2.0, then you let him walk and nothing is hurt.

The PA can file all the complaints they want and still have no leg to stand on.

The only concern is the PA puts pressure on Bryant to refuse any kind of long-term contract as a point of principle for how he was treated this season.

can't make this stuff up, lol

                          per Cubs.com

"When you go out to the mound to talk to the pitcher, why would I not have walk-up music?" manager Joe Maddon said.

The Cubs' new skipper, who always has music blaring from his office, would like three songs for certain in-game situations. And he's willing to ask fans for suggestions.

"That's something for Twitter right there," Maddon said. "You could put out there, I need three songs -- one for yelling at an umpire, changing a pitcher and getting thrown out."

Maddon wanted music from either Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones or Bruce Springsteen. He suggested "Whole Lotta Love" by Zeppelin for when he questions an umpire's call. Maddon said he tried to take that approach with one umpire.

"'You can yell all you want, but I love you, man,'" Maddon said of his conversation. "I said that to [umpire] Bob Davidson, 'I love you,' but he kicked me out anyway."

Edwin Jackson can go away. Late to the park, and then proceeds to get hammered. Still sucks.

I actually hope he finds some success. From everything I've read, he seems like a great teammate and person.
