Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
It might be as simple as they forgot to tell Dempster if he wanted to go to Atlanta or maybe he vetoed itComment

They still have 4 OFs without Johnson.. looks like a sign that Soriano is gone by tomorrow. At least I hope so.. my boy Campana needs some playing timeComment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I know he's your guy, but Campana days of starting are over.
B-Jax will probably only be called up if Sori or Lahair are traded.Comment

Although, I think he could steal 100 bases if he got the chance at 500+ ABs.Comment

...And payroll off the books and something in return for Dempster before watching him walk for nothing.
That was the key. Financial flexibility and room to make big splashes.
This winter is going to be very interesting and I'm falling in love with the core players we're going to have in place going in to next season.
Castro/Rizzo/Jackson/Vitters (If he ever learns to play defense)
This organization needed more than MLB ready players. Our farm system was depleted and these moves made sense to start to restore the depth that we lacked for a long time. Letting those guys go for absolutely nothing would have made zero sense when we aren't anywhere near contention this year.
I trust Theo's plan.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Villanueva, 21, has a .285/.356/.421 batting line in 425 plate appearances with Class A Myrtle Beach this year. The third baseman entered the 2012 season as the 100th-best prospect in MLB, according to Baseball America. He has a .286/.350/.438 batting line in four minor league seasons.
Hendricks, 22, has a 2.82 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 1.0 BB/9 in 130 2/3 innings over the course of 20 starts at Myrtle Beach. The 6'2" right-hander has 150 strikeouts and just 21 walks in 166 1/3 innings since being selected in the eighth round of the 2011 draft.
Brigham, a 24-year-old right-hander, had been pitching at Double-A Frisco. He has a 4.28 ERA with 8.4 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 124 innings over the course of 21 starts this year. Brigham is a fringe arm, Ben Badler of Baseball America writes (on Twitter). ESPN's Keith Law says he has "a plus fastball and power breaking ball but lacks the command and the third pitch to start."
Vizcaino, who entered the 2012 season ranked by Baseball America as the 40th-best prospect in MLB, had Tommy John surgery this spring. The 21-year-old posted a 3.06 ERA with 9.3 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 97 innings for three Braves affiliates as he made his way through Atlanta's minor league system in 2011. The right-hander reached the Major Leagues last year, posting a 4.67 ERA with 8.8 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9 in 17 relief appearances.
Chapman, a 25-year-old right-hander, has a 3.52 ERA with 10.1 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9 in 53 2/3 innings of relief for Atlanta's Triple-A team so far in 2012. The Braves selected him in the 16th round of the 2005 draft.
A little bit of info about the haul of prospects we've received the past couple of days from mlbtraderumors.com. Chapman/Vizcaino came from the Braves, Brigham from Texas for Soto and Villanueva/Hendricks for Dempster. I feel a lot better about the trades after reading this stuff.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
If anybody is willing to talk about Soto's potential I'd be all ears.
As for the three guys you just got, Villanueva is the big guy. Our system is clogged with good third basemen, and Villanueva is a guy that is playing above where he is. He's the third baseman of the future for the Cubs. Hendricks is somebody I have not followed, but he is talked about highly by some scouts. Brigham has been in our system for a number of years and I don't see a future outside of AAA for him, but he could find a place as a reliever. Hopefully the Cubs got some pieces that will help y'all in the future.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
His potential to sweat is high, that's about it.
Has never ever really lived up to his rookie season. He'll be solid behind the plate, he'll hit some homers, he'll swing and miss a lot, he'll be a solid pick up if he hits .250 the rest of the way.Comment

So I see Dempster tried to do some spin control by saying he never turned down the Braves.
