Wood disappoints again and Marmol was Marmol.. At least Dolis looked good the inning he was out there.

I could care less what they do with Marmol right now. Trade him for a set of baseballs and let Dolis give it a shot.

What do you guys think Samardzija will do in his first start of the year. I am hoping for 5 or 6 strong innings.Check out my Baseball Rumors Blog http://baseballrumors101.blogspot.com/Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I had a feeling the quality of pitching would drop off pretty drastically with the 4 and 5 guys. But hey, if Dempster, Garza, and Samardzija throw in every start for the rest of the year like they did this week, the Cubbies may finish above .500!!!!!
It's going to be a really long seasonComment

Dempster to the rest of the club: "Please score some blankety-blank runs and stop striking out 12 blankety-blank times per game!!!"
Batting Casto 3rd is silly. he projects to be a 1 or 2 hitter...might as well hit him there...
Gallardo is a top-shelf hurler...but this team has needed to talk about discipline for years.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

I think it's pretty obvious that Byrd and Soto are worthless. Time for Clevenger or Castillo to get some starts.
And Brett Jackson time come on! And Castro hits third because he is our best player.Wolverines Packers Cubs Celtics

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I guess a hitter that is projected to eventually hit 20+ home runs and hit .300 every year is a 1 or 2 hitter. The best hitter hits 3, and he's our best hitter. Who would you rather have? Byrd, Soto, Barney, LaHair (maybe, more like 4th), Soriano, etc. Batting Cassie 3 is smart, and a good baseball mind knows that.

Your point is right, though. There's really no one else to put in that spot that will be more productive. Let's just hope he figures it out quickly and gets back to last year's form.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I am well aware that Castro is the best bat the cubs have; I am also aware that there aren't a wealth of options. But I'm also not going to pretend this club is really "in it" this year. Believe me, I would love otherwise... Stick LaHair at 3 and say "go for it, bro".
I can see the good in batting Castro third, in the sense that it is a clear signal the club is at least trying to look like they're playing to win, rather than simply "incubating".
I actually like the lineup, with all the contact and speed 1-3...presuming DeJesus and Barney actually bring the contact.
That being said, if the Cubs develop/purchase a lineup that can win the pennant, I am willing to bet that lineup doesn't have Castro at 3.
Personally, I would like to see him hit over .300, 18+ homers, a gawdy number of doubles, and score a gajillion runs from the lead-off spot...with a credible middle of the order behind him.
If a pennant is won within the next 4-8 yrs, I think we would see something like that.
blah blah blah. I'll never complain about having a guy like Castro, though.
EDIT: I do have to ask...how is batting Castro at 3 really "smart"er than at the top of the order? It still comes back, for me, to the fact that Castro does not project to be a middle of the order hitter. That's not to say a 3-hole guy has to hit 66hrs or whatever...but still. I think there is a considerable consensus that Castro, at least while young, screams top-2 in the order. Pop, speed, contact, aggression, a little reckless. You want him on the paths as often as possible while the kind of hitter that makes pitchers pay for mistakes is up at the plate.
This brings me to the real point...he needs to really learn how to hit 1-2 if that is where he will be when the club has "developed". A year of thinking you have to hit homers and drive in runs rather than learning the kind of bat control you need to take advantage of defenses and situations makes the transition and development more difficult, i would think.
Then again, he might just hit the ball, and it really doesn't matter.Last edited by fugazi; 04-12-2012, 11:09 PM.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Wow can't believe Stewart hit his 1st home run and Cubs lead 4-0 if only if it was with the bases loaded.Check out my Baseball Rumors Blog http://baseballrumors101.blogspot.com/Comment
