Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I may be wrong, but Kurcz's stats look like he's a reliever. Baseball reference doesn't have much on him, but he was an 11th round draft pick in 2010. Overall, I think Theo is more than worth Carpenter and Kurcz, I'd give them up for him a hundred times out of a hundred. I think we're all thankful to have Theo and happy the compensation issue is done with.. at least with Boston.
Jackson coming up to the bigs midway through the season makes sense for the Cubs economically. If he stays in AAA until mid-season, the Cubs get an extra year of control over him. I think him being in the minors will only benefit him in the long run though. He can get better and work on the strikeout problem he's faced in the past with less than half the pressure that would be applied if he were on the Cubs' opening day roster. No need to rush him, he's only going to get better at AAA.Comment

Randy Wells and Wellington Castillo to Iowa. Steve Clevenger gets the backup catcher roleComment

Edit: Theo compensation is 100% complete.. finally. We get Jair Bogaerts, 19 year old first baseman whose been playing for the Dominican Summer League Red Sox team. And on the topic of compensation, Chris Carpenter has seen a doctor about getting surgery on his throwing elbow. I think it's to remove bone spurs and nothing extremely serious like Tommy John surgery.Last edited by k_mac; 03-29-2012, 05:49 PM.Comment

Samardzija cracks the rotation. Coleman, Wells and Wood sent to Iowa. That makes rotation Garza, Dempster, Maholm, Volstad and Samardzija, with the last three in any order.

I just see Boston blowing this out of proportion because they feel entitled to get more compensation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Carpenter would have had to pass a physical provided by the Red Sox for the deal to go through, so if there was an elbow problem when we shipped him over there, they would have known about it.Comment

No Tony Campana on ML roster.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
That's disappointing. I haven't talked to him since the first week of spring, but from friends that I've talked to, he was expecting to make the ML team. Mather had a really good Spring and is one of the more versatile players in the organization, so I can definitely see why they chose him over Tony. Hopefully he plays well in Iowa and gets another shot soon.Comment

Yeah in the article I saw about the final roster, they interviewed him and Sveum and the GM told him that he would definitely be back up this year because they love his speed and what that can do. I'm sure they'll have him work on his feel for the strike zone and getting on base at AAA so he can develop into a legitimate leadoff hitter.Comment

From everything I hear, Sappelt will be called up before tony. Kind of makes sense. Sappelt has a good bat and very good speed. Campana needs more time to develop his bat.
