Nah, Rizzo went through similar struggles. Gotta remember the kid is only 23, and this is his first full season in the majors.

Wasn't able to have a long enough stint last year where he faced these types of struggles to have some frame of reference where he could make adjustments in the off-season. Give him time, he'll find it.

Another good win for the Cubs though. Team does not quit.

I don't care if Rizzo ever steals another base lol. I'd rather have two men on with Bryant up.

Fowler's role and ability, offensively, is to get on base. This is especially so if he's going to bat in front of the big guys, whether leadoff or otherwise. He's not fulfilling those responsibilities. It's early in the season, he's not doing an abysmal job, he's walking well enough to get OB at a .350 clip...but Montero is doing everything a leadoff hitter should do, and better than Fowler...

Speed on the basepaths? Even if Fowler got on he's going to steal <12 bases. Big deal. I can't imagine Montero being slow will cost more runs than his being OB more frequently.

If Maddon can be "unconventional" and bat the SP 8th, surely this isn't too much of a stretch...
It's not about stolen bases. It's about going 1st to 3rd, scoring from 2nd on a single, from 1st on a double.. it's about taking the extra base. Montero doesn't allow that if he's on in front of Rizzo/Bryant.

You're acting like Fowler is hitting .220. His slash numbers right now are only 10-20 points below his career numbers. He's doing pretty much exactly what the organization expected him to do when they brought him in to fill that role. Fowler's also got 8 steals right now. I can't imagine him getting less than 4 steals the rest of the year.. even if steals aren't necessarily important.

I'm not concerned about Soler. The Strikeouts are concerning but It is so odd how bad he is in cold weather... because the past week or so he has been progressing better it looked like. and Fowler is the perfect leadoff hitter for this team. .345 OBP and .375 OBP last year that's kinda what you are looking for.

Lets all hope Wada replaces Wood sooner rather than Later.

I'm probably hating on Fowler too much.

Just seemed like every time I checked he was going O-fer with everyone behind him getting on...probably just exaggeration of a small sample size.

That being said...I'd still do it

Looks like Wood is staying in the pen after his save today.

No roster moves have been announced yet, though I'd assume Schlitter goes back down and Wada comes up.

Tough way to end the Pirates series after Arrieta shoved for 7 innings but I will still take 6 wins in a row any time of the year.

Really happy the way this team has been playing. Need to keep it going.

Baez was removed from the game in the middle of an inning tonight in Iowa. The team reported it wasn't injury-related.

The Cubs are making some roster moves tomorrow (already announced that Coke will be DFA'd). Could Javy be returning?

UPDATE: Doesn't look like it. Just read that the team is recalling Lake.

If Baez continues to hit well, he'll be up shortly. By the way, Castillo was just traded to Seattle. Don't know who's coming back.

Baez is still striking out at nearly a 30% clip.

More strikeouts is not something this team needs right now.

That's true, but at some point I'd like to see him work it out at the major league level. He's got too much talent to be a total bust.

If we're in the position we were in last year, I would agree with you.

However, this team is clearly trying to win now and will be trying to for the foreseeable future. Having a guy "work it out" in the middle of a chase for a very attainable wild card spot on a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 7 years, is not something I'm overly interested in.

Him coming to the bigs and hitting .200 does nothing for him, and does nothing for us.

Cubs acquire reliever Yoervis Medina from Mariners for Welington Castillo.

Medina has a 2.82 ERA with 140Ks over 137IP in the bigs.

                                Solid addition. I like it.

As for Baez, where does he fit? Theo said they're not working him in the OF in Iowa, so the only thing I can think of is that he or Russell move to 3B and Bryant goes to LF. Maybe they move Castro to 3B, Russell to SS? I don't know.
