Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

I didn't realize Cub fans were thinking this was their year anyway...it's all about the future for this team.

I really don't see how this team competes in the NL with the Nats, the Cards, the Dodgers, Giants, and even Pirates. Next year the Cubs should be seriously thinking playoffs, but I thought Cubs fans were just enjoying this year to watch the prospects start to payoff.

I do agree about Ross, but at least he does have a walk-off single to his name.

The team is also in the top half of baseball (12th according to ESPN.com) in OBP... far from crap.

Bullpen help looks to be on the way (CJ Edwards is in AAA now, Ramirez should be back soon, and hopefully Medina provides a boost)

It is infuriating that they seem to play to their competition level. The bench will hopefully be getting a big boost soon, whether through trade or getting LaStella or Olt back from the DL.
      seriously? 12th in OBP?

I checked, and yeah (well, mlb.com has them at 13th, but whatevs). So difficult to believe. Next to last in hits, second in walks lol

It wasn't panic, just an over-exuberant way of saying I'm done with any and all thinking of this year as anything but a prelude.

I'm not. No high expectations over here. That's why I want them to play the youth and let them figure it out. Don't be buyers at the deadline either.

We don't need them to pull a 'Jim Hendry' and mortgage the farm for one year. It's not necessary.

Lester was lights out in May. Bad Starts do happen. Ross is doing his job he's a backup Catcher and one of the better pitch framers in baseball. I don't get the outrage.

Umm who other than fowler is gonna leadoff they got him because that was a glaring need of this team. Even Vets go through slumps.

I mean what were your expectations for this team.... Get through June with close to the same record or .500 that's a win because July really lightens up. And I know they have struggled with bad teams but full strength i think they will get better.

this is what an up and down team feels like, It's hard to imagine i guess after the last few years.

^ This...this is what I meant earlier about the perspective of the FO. There were rumors/whatever that they might actually "go for it" this year, and this has contributed to a lot of the speculation re: Castro and Baez and a handful of other things. I hope some of that talk has simmered down. The club is in great shape; don't want any deadline craziness. let it ride.

I don't think many people thought there was a realistic shot...i think the disenchantment I feel (and that i hear from others) has to do with a mish-mash of tiny issues...some of which, because they seem to never go away, are more irritating than they would be otherwise.

For some it's Castro, for others it's the K-parade, the bullpen, awkward roster management, the promising start, etc...years of bad situational hitting, uneven player development, etc...

There's also a difference between dropping a series to the Nats or Royals, and losing 2 series to Milwaukee (while they were being bandied about as the potentially worse team in the league) and losing 2 of 3 to Miami.

Pretty cool article examining the effect of Maddon batting the pitcher 8th all season.

The pitcher has batted eighth in the Cubs' lineup in every single game this season. Why? And does it work? Manager Joe Maddon explains.

Today is one of the many reasons I love Maddon. He wasn't about to let Rondon **** this up. Short leash time for him. Excellent call to bring Strop in right away.

3 of 4 from the Nats!

Rizzo and Bryant are the two best Cub hitters since...idk...

Castro with the bases-loaded single. Going to need more from him, as Montero has dipped.

Bullpen did a great job today, and Hendricks made it through a really nasty jam in the 5th only allowing one run.

                      Denorfia went 3 for 5.

I never thought much of Denorfia, but he could be a big addition off the DL. Maybe he can hit in the middle and keep Castro down in the 6/7 slot.

Yeah, especially since this means cubs are stuck with Herrera for another month i would guess.

still holding out hope for Schwarber DH call up. Even if it would be for a short period of time.

Just read that he broke it on a head first slide into 2B... even worse.

Cubs signed Rafael Soriano to a Minor League deal.

                                35yrs old.

I'm not mad about it. I do like the "closer-by-committe" approach, though.
