I mentioned it earlier in this thread, but I went to a minor league series back in May and got to see Schwarber up close...he was abysmal behind the plate even at that level. His throws to 2nd were really poor (slow release and very inaccurate), he had several passed balls, and on a few plays at the late where they actually had the runner he dropped the ball. There is just no way he could play catcher every day in the majors right now...

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
^this is what you hear everywhere...and if it's true, which it more or less seems to be...how can the organization feel like it will change?
I don't think there is any coincidence that the best franchises of our day have had great catchers...Yadi, Posey, Posada, Varitek, Lopez... I know Posada wasn't the best defensive catcher, but he was far more balanced than Schwarber seems he'd ever be.
How many BIG HITTING catchers are there? Not many, very few, and the first name most of us probably think of is Piazza...and he's been gone a while. Why is this so? Because their responsibilities are altogether different, and teams don't seem to prioritize hitting at that position.
Let's compare to SS...how many teams would put up with Pete Incaviglia-esque defense at SS? Even if the guy mashed...
Here's his valuation, as I see it
1) Trade bait...he's not a catcher. He's probably not really even an OFer. He could maybe be a 1B, but not here, of course.
2) The NL adopts the Dh within the next 18 months
3) 40-man Roster call-up, throwing caution to the wind if you put a glove in his hand.
4) starter for the Cubs.
While I think his bat could actually be THE difference maker for the Cubs this year on the offensive side...or Next year...there's just nowhere to put the guy.
That being said...I woldn't mind if something changed and he figured it out. Why wouldn't they put him in RF? Can Soler not play LF?Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

I don't know much about Schwarber's arm strength, it seems to be okay, but I think if he plays anywhere in the OF, it'll be left.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Who cares if he is a marginal defensive catcher at this point? You want to keep tossing David Ross out there who can't even hit his body weight? Taylor Teagarden??
Offense has been our biggest issue. He provides it. Call him up and let him figure it out.Last edited by JODYE; 07-16-2015, 05:04 PM.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
/checks author okay that makes sense.
of course it would help his trade value if he would been playing better. I'm not excusing he's had an awful year but don't you think the best time to trade the guy was when he had his best professional season(which was last year) if they really wanted to get rid of him.Last edited by BleacherBum2310; 07-17-2015, 12:11 PM.Wolverines Packers Cubs Celtics

And it's also getting frustrating that this organization is always held back by someone and their bull**** contract and/or lazy selfish play.
Zambrano, Soriano, Ramirez, now Castro. I'm ****ing sick of it.
Theo needs to cut the damn fat already regardless if there's not fair trade value. He ****ed up; he needs to acknowledge this and move on.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Yes, because that $5 million this year and .250 BA is really holding us back from our true potential.
You should probably be more upset about Edwin Jackson who is sitting in the bullpen collecting $11 million to be a mop up guy. Or Dexter Fowler who is hitting .235 for 8 million.
Everyone is tired of the anti-Castro agenda. We ****ing get it.Last edited by JODYE; 07-17-2015, 02:43 PM.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

You speak for everyone here?? Didn't know that.
And I won't shut up until that LAZY BITCH is gone. I'd ****ing fight him if I could. Making all those millions and just chillin', relaxin' the most.
If I was Riz, I'd jump his **** in the clubhouse and make him piss down his leg and beg to be traded.
LOL, sorry boys, I can't help it. :wink:Comment

On another note, tonight's game was as advertised for Schwarber. Prodigious bat. Long way to go as a catcher, if it works at catcher at all.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Everyone in here needs to take a step back from the keyboard and breathe for a second. A lot of unnecessary hostility in this thread.
In particular the excessive profanity - whether it gets caught by the forum filter or not - is going to stop.
You're all rooting for the same team. Chill.Comment
