He's waaayyyy above his career numbers, and may be it's something clicking, maybe it's luck, or maybe (likely) it's somewhere in the middle. He's a good obp/speed guy with just a tiny bit of pop. Don't get me wrong, I like Maybin, and I've been a fan if his for years, but he's the type of guy our system is dripping with right now. You can probably get a pretty damn good package for him right now. I say do it. Sell high.

Markakis, on the other hand, I doubt anyone would take him unless we ate the contract, and even then it's iffy. A corner outfielder with 0 hr? Nope.
I get that the trade makes sense, but the year has been a struggle and to me Maybin has been a spot of excitement in a rather boring lineup. A trade could help the future but as someone that watches almost every game, I want to keep the excitement in the lineup.

I love when they interview Maybin on Braves Live post-game. He just always seems so genuinely happy to be in Atlanta.

Would you rather keep that tiny bit of excitement now, or try to build towards a championship? We haven't won a title in 20 years, a pennant in 16. If Maybin can help us do one of those things, great. If not, trade him and get someone who can. I don't care one tiny bit if we only win 70 instead of 80 games. I don't want this franchise to hover around the middle; I want to perennially win 90-100 games.

To play devil's advocate...can we expect this performance for 2, 3 or 4 years? If he's playing so well, does it make sense to sell high (like we did with Kimbrel)?

If we keep playing well and hang in the race, I think we'll hold on to him. But another five-game losing streak, and you almost have to move him. We lack impact positional players in the minor leagues. He may be able to fetch us one or two.

I would think A.J., Grilli and Kelly could go on the block too. They wouldn't get as much, but they'd help the rebuild.

I'll be shocked if Grilli is on the team come August 1st.

We'll also have money to spend this upcoming offseason. I'd hope we'd be in on Cespedes and/or Wieters, who would both add some offense (Wieters is from Charleston).

Not a huge Wieters fan...guy would be 30 and is a career average offensive player and had TJS, not good for a catcher.

Here's my thing with Maybin: you absolutely shop him (as they should for everyone not named Freeman/Simmons/Miller), but unless you get a solid return for him, you don't move him. He's 28 and we're paying him $5M this year, $7M next year, and an option for $9M the following year. If he has finally reached his potential and becomes the plus player he has been this year, that is CHEAP production and we will be competing hopefully by 2017.

Again, no problem moving him IF you get multiple pieces that will help us in the future, but I don't want to see him traded for a 24 year old reliever and a high school catcher drafted this year.

                  Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves

Wieters is better than average. His last 3 full seasons before the Tommy John he had a .749 ops and averaged 22 hr. He's not a world breaker, but that's a solid bat. And he was doing even better last season before he went down (.839 ops, was on pace for roughly 25 hr, 100 rbi). He's struggled getting on base this year after a late start, but has continued to show pretty decent power.

As far as his actual surgery, I'm not really sure about how catchers do with tjs. Logically, if pitchers can come back, so could catchers. But even if he has to move to left field or something (I think he's athletic enough to do it), you're still looking at a switch hitter good for 20 hr.

Also, our next option is Bethancourt....

Edit: I looked it up. Very few major league catchers have had it done. The ones that have saw a pretty small dip in their caught stealing %. Most of them never returned because they were backups who, almost by definition, are fringe major leaguers.

Wieters career OPS+ is exactly at 100...in his best years he's put up 3 WAR or so. I just see a guy who's been pretty average overall (with some pop) and who would be on the downside of his career...I want no part of that. It would be like a Markakis signing all over again.

Markakis had shown more obvious decline. His slg was .371 for the two seasons prior to coming here. I also don't really trust ops+ because it relies on the "lg" stats that wildly fluctuate from year to year. But even so, a league average hitter with some pop at catcher is pretty good.

Well guys, I don't know how any of you feel, but I am absolutely loving this team presently and for the future. Our young guys have so much potential, and if we keep this team together after the deadline I believe that it will be one interesting season down to the last game.

Back at .500. Now we need to keep stringing some Ws together. Seems like every time we get to this point we hit another rough patch.

I didn't realize Cody Martin got traded last week. First couple of weeks of the season, it looked like he was going to be a key guy in the pen. And then it just fell apart.

The pitching is looking better and they signed a lot of international players. They will have a lot of trade bait in the next year or 2 in the minors if all the pitching works out.
