A chance to win the division? They haven't had a chance all year...they just are too limited. If things break right they could find themselves in the wild card hunt, but that's about all.

Hated it came against Wisler too.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

Eh...they're only 5 games back as we near the ASB. This series had nothing to do with why I don't think they'll win the division. Baseball is a marathon and the cream usually rises to the top. Washington is a deep and talented team...they are supposed to win the division. We are close not because of how we have played, but more because of how poorly they have started. It will take a miracle for this team to hang in and have a chance to make the playoffs, let alone win the division. I thought that before this series and I still do...

I agree. I just don't think it's realistic to think they could beat out a far more talented Washington team this year. And I don't think Hart ever thought so. I think he's committed to a rebuild, because he knows this is his last job, so there's less pressure on him to change that mindset prematurely

The team only gave up 5 runs in the first 20 innings of the series. If they had only gotten average offensive production in those games they could've been up 2 game to none when Wisler took the mound.

All year the only thing keeping the team from being over .500 was the pitching. The pitching has come around and now the offense has died the past week. We're halfway through a season, so it isn't crazy to think the offense can stay near the top 5 in the league in all categories like they are now, so if the pitching really has turned the corner, then why can't this team have a shot at being above .500?

The offense was supposed to be the reason the team would have a record reflecting a rebuilding year. Yet, they've stayed near a .260 average at the midway point. Unless this series is an indication of what's to come the rest of the year from the offense, then I still believe this team can have a legitimate shot at finishing over .500 as long as the pitching continues improving like it has a of late. It would do wonders for all the young players on the roster to play in meaningful September games. It would put the team way ahead of schedule with just pure experience alone.

Removing a bat like Freeman from this lineup really hurts...this is a fragile lineup to begin with and without him it changes the way we get pitched. Also, the Nats can pitch...this wasn't the Phillies staff. The Nats have the deepest starting staff in baseball...it's not realistic to expect our offense to maintain its level of production without Freeman against that staff. It's frustrating, I know, but the future is still bright. Very excited about what Hart is doing.

I'm pretty happy with the season so far. Yeah, there's been some frustration, but they've played better than expected. I like the attitude. More talent is coming.

With all the young pitching we have, would you entertain selling high on Williams Perez at the deadline? I'd be tempted to try and get a good bat for him from a pitching-needy contender.

A good prospect bat, yes. A veteran, absolutely not.

Yeah, I should have clarified - a good young hitter with upside, not a veteran.

If everything goes as planned, we should have a surplus of pitching down the line. As good as he's been so far this year, I don't really see Perez fitting the long-term plans. So if we could start building some young positional depth, I'd definitely consider trading him, for the right piece.

Let's acquire Uggla again...after all, he's still on our payroll.

Not only on our payroll, but at the top of it.

I get the Nats have a good staff, but we averaged 6 runs a game the first 6 games against them. Sure Freeman is hurt, but we didn't even score, but 3 runs the entire series. In my mind the series was winnable, and with the pitching that showed up, we should've taken 2 of 3 no excuses.

Every time this team gets close to 1st, they collapse the next series. Maybe it's the youth, maybe I'm looking too much into it.

I think you may be looking too much into it. The Braves were right at .500 in late June after a 3 game winning streak with a chance to take the division lead. That speaks more to the Nats not having run away with the division yet than it does about the Braves falling short for any reason other than them just not being a very good team overall.

It's a lack of talent offensively. We've only got one regular with an OPS over .800, and he was out. Only 3 guys with 100 abs have a slg % over .400: Freeman (.520), Johnson (.445, and only .319 since coming back), and Maybin (.401). You can only get lucky with timely hitting for so long, and this team has zero power with Freeman out. Aside from Freddie, this team only has 3 more hr that Giancarlo Stanton by himself.

The Braves are right at the top 5 in runs even without any power. Singles and doubles can win you games if you're consistent. The problem lately is the whole team isn't being consistent. Peterson is I'm a slump, no one is coming through with runners on. The team is in a bad slump. I'd imagine they'll get out of it soon. Hopefully this isn't the tale of the rest of the year.
