He's not like other 30 year old players. As far as having not played in the majors yet, I don't have any doubt he'll do well; recent Cuban signees have been able to have success quickly, which points to Cuban pitching being much better than it used to be. He's played roughly half of the games as a typical 30 year old American because Cuban seasons are short. He's also under team control and cheap. You don't normally sign 30 year old players because they're more expensive. If the dude can put up an .850 ops at $6 mil, that's an absolute steal. The plan is to compete in 2017, and he'll still just be 32. It's reasonable he won't be in decline yet at that point. I'd rather move Wood now and bet on Wisler/Banuelos/Folty being up there with Julio and Miller than trade one of those younger guys.
As far as Peraza, he was our top prospect, but that's not saying much. He'll probably be a good player; .350 obp, albeit with no power, but fantastic speed and plus defense. But, as far as top prospects go, he's not that great. In baseball America's midseason top prospects, Peraza was 26, Olivera was 16. Peraza obviously has more career ahead of him, but Olivera has a MUCH higher ceiling and floor.
As far as Bird, we'll see. He was 15th for the Dodgers, we'll see where that puts him here. They have a better farm system than us; the Dodgers had 4 of the top 20 at midseason and Peraza is probably their 4th best prospect now.
