Re: The 2009/2010 Big East Thread

I'll take 2-0 in the BE. Chris Wright has put together a really strong 3 game stretch. He will need to be good again vs Marquette on Wed and then against UCONN on Sat. We haven't had too much success against Marquette in the last 2 years but then again they had some good kids.

BTW, there are some freakishly athletic guys in the BE this year. Just off the top of my head:

    Wes Johnson - Cuse
    DJ Kennedy- St Johns
    Justin Burrell - St Johns
    Sticks - UCONN
    Gilbert Brown- Pitt
    Herb Pope - Seton Hall

Another big win for Pitt. Jamie Dixon is one of the best coaches in the league. Cinci has so much more talent than Pitt, but somehow Jamie gets the most out of his players.

That Gilbert Brown dunk on Toyloy was the epitome of manliness, and very filthy

            Jamie Dixon is the man.

I do like how they are running Gibbs off of double screens a lot more, and really making an effort to get him a catch and shoot. He is by far their best shooter, and they are really trying to set him up.

Having Gibert and Jermaine back has made all of the difference in the world. You can tell how much more confident they are playing now.

Wow...is Pitt for real? I'm beginning to think so. What an improvement this team has made from their loss to Indiana til now.

Pay attention BE fans...Pitt may not carry the household names we became accustomed to hearing about, but they still have Jaime Dixon and they still have a tenacious defense.

With back to back road victories over Syracuse and Cincy, I would say we are for real. That game against Indiana was just a total stinker; we played about as bad as we could. It was Jermaine Dixon's first game back after breaking his foot twice over the summer, and the entire team was out of sync.

I don't think we are good enough to win the Big East, but I do think we can sneak into the top 4, and get the bye. I also think we will make the tourney; this team was able to beat a pretty good Wichita St team (13-2, with a win over Texas Tech) at a neutral site before Gilbert Brown and Jermaine Dixon came back.

The good thing about this team is while we had some terrible games at the beginning of the year (Wofford, Duquesne, Indiana, and New Hampshire), we only ended up losing to Indiana. Our only other loss was to Texas, which has happened to everyone that has played them this year.

I am also starting to feel better about this years squad. It looks as though Freeman and Clark are stepping up also and I like the way Vaughn has been playing lately.

Yeah, the only that scares me is our lack of depth. We go about 8 deep with Sims, Thompson, and Bennimon off the bench. That's a lot of minutes for our guards. It would be a nightmare if someone goes down to injury.

I wish we still had Maclin. Him & Vaughn would give us great depth at the 5.

Honestly UC played horrible last night, their best player is a freshman and he played like one in the second half. UC just couldnt hit any big shots in the second half. The one thing to me that is very noticable is that Jamie Dixon is alot better in game coach then Mick Cronin. A win is a win especially in the road but that is the worst UC has played in a while.

Yeah Cincy is a good team this year as well. Stephenson, like you said, plays like a freshman at times. He can you cheer him and boo him in the matter of a minute just like any other Freshman.

And I wouldn't sell Cronin short on how good of a coach he is in game. Stephenson took some ill advised shots and Pitt is a well coached, and good team. Its tough to lose a game like that at home, but this is the Big East and that happens.

I wouldn't say Cincy played bad. They took some ill-advised shots in the 2nd half, but they shot close to 50% against a very good defensive team. Plus, they only turned the ball over 8 times. I don't know how much better they could play offensively, especially against Pitt's defense.

They had way too many bad possesions late in the game.

I don't know - I just saw them in person last Monday at home vs. DePaul, and we have some real weaknesses inside. We give up a fair number of offensive rebounds, but don't generate many on our end. This is going to be tough to overcome on those nights when we don't shoot well from the outside.

After Syracuse and Cincinnati, coaches are going to start watching film on us pretty closely and will make some adjustments. The UConn game and the upcoming home games vs. Louisville and Georgetown will give us a real sense of how this team matches up with the top teams in the conference. The Big East is so deep. Even though we are 3-0, I am still going to say that I will be thrilled with a conference record of .500. With such an inexperienced team, anything better than .500 would be a bonus.
