If gameplay is where they say it is, this won't matter as much in the end.

When you go back and look at that game, graphically, things really haven't improved much (and player's shoulders/arms look better 3 years ago). And definitely not the arena atmosphere. That's just kind of, I don't know, sad?

I had to go back some digging in those threads for a project I'm working on.

You should look at your posts from then. Cant say you were any more happier about builds, jerseys, lighting etc. lol

                Sadly, no.

I might break my copy if I hear "angel food cake" again.

Which says a lot about how bad the player models are this year...they're worse.

And I said graphically (and atmosphere) haven't improved much since then. I never said they were good in previous years. So what's your point exactly?

You try way too hard man. The models aren't as bad as you'd lead people to believe.

Uh how about we get back on topic?

I do think 2k traveled to every arena this season. But i don't think they recorded anything that will go in the actual game. I think they recorded the frequency response and reverb convolutions of every arena, so that they could equalize their current crowd sounds to sound like different arenas.

I can't be 100% sure about this until i play the game, but judging from the trailer and the gameplay videos i'm fairly certain about it. Also, i'm an audio engineer, so i'm no beginner.

If it is true, it's frankly pretty lazy. They basically took the shortcut/easy option and have now advertised it as if they legitimately recorded new sounds. In the music production world, people who match frequency responses are considered amateurs and cheats. It's basically the McDonald's of audio. Maybe 2k couldn't get access to live NBA games to record new crowd sounds for some reason?

For the record, I think the legit new sounds were the buzzers, nets, and ball bounces (i.e. things that they can record when there's no NBA games going on in the arena). But i think that - as we've made very clear in this thread - the crowd atmosphere is the real thing that counts. That's the thing that builds and releases tension for the player. NBA Live 15 were AWESOME in this aspect. It's a shame 2k17's potentially awesome gameplay wont be matched with authentic arena sounds that can legitimately build and release suspense. Audio is such an important element of the immersive videogaming experience.
It's like having a beautiful new FallOut game with awesome graphics but with mediocre music made by 20 year old in his mum's basement.

Can you tell me why you think the crowd sounded so plain in the past... or why the announcers, crowd and other sounds all seemed to be on the exact same wavelength?

People keep saying this, but my experience with Live it doesn't seem that special. Yes they cheer and boo at the right times, better than 2K, but every arena sounds the same and they have much less arena-specific sounds and music than 2K.

I think if 2K fixed the response logic it would be fine.

Depends what you mean by plain? Plain can mean a lot of things, so i'm not sure what element you're referring to exactly.

But, as with music, i think it mostly just comes down to the source material. You're obviously going to get a different result from recording an actual crowd that's watching a live NBA game than you are from hiring a bunch of people and recording them in an arena. The actual NBA crowd are more excited, engaged, there's more vibe.
The same can be said about commentators.

Also, there is a degree of coding that comes into it too. How do you tell the sound to flow from one crowd sound to the other and keep it sounding natural? 2k's sound coding seems to have been basically the same as far as i can tell.

Also, perspective. You've heard the crowd sounds a million times so obviously going to sound plain to you.

My guess is that 2k ran into some kind of problem when recording the actual crowd sounds (be it licensing rights, or noise pollution, etc), but decided to stick with the original promotion plan anyway.

And in case you couldn't tell, i believe 2k come up with their marketing plan a year in advance, and then develop the game based from that. (that's why we see shiny new features/gimmicks while core things get neglected). And that's also why submitting a wish list after like January is kinda pointless.

By plain I mean the reverb sounds bad for some reason.. when compared to NBA Live or live television for example it sounds more muffled, let alone in an arena.

They may have gotten rim and net sounds, but im not sure about the arena specific chants and no idea about the crowd
