    Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

After playing a few more games defence is definitely not improved enough. On all-star in case anyone is wondering. Transition D is terrible, if one guy is at the other end of the court his matchup will get a layup every time because no one bothers to guard the paint. Terrible shots go in frequently for both teams. CPU takes the dumbest shots with the wrong players and is rewarded for it (step back Dwight Powell 3's).

Make sure to use the off ball controls for D. You can disrupt guys like Curry and Klay coming off those screens.

        Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

Halfway through MyTeam Domination and I'm becoming less impressed with the game. Initially I thought my struggles were related more to having low-tier players, but now I've got a decent all-star squad and I'm actually seeing MORE issues than I was initially.

PGs: flashback Jay Williams, Derrick Rose, Eric Bledsoe
        SGs: Rodney Hood, Devin Booker
SFs: Kawhi Leonard, Robert Horry, Brandon Ingram
        PFs: Paul Millsap, Jabari Parker
Cs: Joel Embiid, Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel

Just so you know who I'm working with while struggling against the likes of the Mavericks, Timberwolves and Kings.

        • Not being able to trust adjustments to stick is beginning to really suck now that teams are adjusting more to ME. Sometimes it seems like they're staying, other times it's obvious they're being reset.

        • Major illegal screen action for CPU, dragging my defenders all over the court. I've seen the big from the three point line to the stanchion screen, but plenty of other little ones where a CPU player just forces
one of my guys out of the way by a couple feet so their guy can score. It's unbelievable.

        • I can NOT dribble drive at all, defenders stick to me like glue no matter how many picks I run or dribbles I combo together. The CPU doesn't buy pump fakes, it doesn't bite on jabs, and it rarely gets caught on screens. Meanwhile, the human defense practically forces you to play off-ball as whatever man is about to be screened, otherwise you're offering a wide open shot. I also see the CPU have animations where they wrap around my guy doing the defending through sheer speed, which is incredibly frustrating when I'm not offered the same opportunities.

        • The CPU obviously hits a perfect release most of the time, especially on double-contested layups, whereas human error means I'm hitting a slightly early or slightly late release just as often and watching Jahlil Okafor short arm a layup over Ricky Rubio.

        • Practically the only dunk animation my guys have is a huge ****-back and double-handed slam that leaves the ball super vulnerable to blocks from behind. It's a little absurd how animated it looks.

        • The CPU is just plain faster than human players. The gathering animation on fast breaks is so exaggerated, Leonard can't beat anyone down the floor no matter how much extra space he's given, and human AI pushes up the court much slower than CPU. In this most recent game I gave up three wide open threes to Rudy Gay (it's very interesting how often DPOY Kawhi Leonard prefers to sag 10 feet off his man) in the corner in transition. My guys have a hand in their face on that same shot 9.5/10 times.

        • Separation on things like fades is also exaggerated in favor of the CPU. Dirk or Chris Bosh will post you up and you just have to accept it's 2 points for the CPU, it's a miracle the CPU isn't programmed to recognize that and just do it all game long. Meanwhile I get blocked about half the time I go for a post up move of any kind, and just like dribble drives the CPU doesn't buy any of my fakes so nearly all my post up scores come down to luck.

There are so many moments where this game looks and feels incredible, and these are issues that don't keep me from enjoying the game for the most part or have kept me from advancing in this mode. I haven't touched any other part of the game yet besides messing around with league expansion options (seems very cool), MyTeam Blacktop (I don't like this mode much) and a few Play Now Online games that were hampered by terrible input lag (I had to release the shot stick when the meters were nearly half full to get slightly late releases) so I don't know how much these issues pervade the rest of the game. It could just be a result of mashing a bunch of random players together, maybe their chemistry is off. I've won with variations of this team by 20 and in comeback OT wins.

Broadly speaking, I'm very impressed with the breadth of play styles on offer from the CPU. Each team has played, or should I say run plays, that look unique and take advantage of what makes that team good (or at least decent). My issues stem completely from the fact there are consistent advantages given to the CPU that you have to be willing to overlook in order to have fun, and they're issues that come from fairly blatant AI and animation advantages for their players that are also given a mirrored disadvantage for your AI. If it were easier for CPU players to get around the defense, I wouldn't mind so much if it didn't also mean Kawhi Leonard is wandering from the three point arc to the paint because it's time for a wide open three. I wouldn't mind so much if it were harder for human players to get open looks off dribble moves and screens if it didn't also mean the AI was completely unfooled or uninhibited by off-ball screens to get shooters open when the dribble drive fails.

I know most of this board plays on Hall of Fame and studies (or creates) Youtube tip videos and likely has a refutation for all of this, but I have been seeing it consistently for days now and I'm not sure any of it has to do with play style. I play patiently, I run plays, I man-up on D until it's obvious the game's thinking three passes ahead and I need to make sure my off-ball so-called studs don't screw up. I've been an All-Star/Superstar player since I started with the series in 2K5, I don't claim to be a savant. But until last year I also didn't so often see the wheels turning under the hood the way I did then and now, how the mathematics were calculating in the CPU's favor before the refs called jump ball.

The worst has probably become getting used to the score board updating before the shot has even gone in, and guessing with almost 100% accuracy which shots have "gone in" before they've gone in.

So I played this bad boy till 4 in the freaking fracking morning last night for a 5 hour session.

Disclaimer - I am a regular Joe playing on Pro Default out of the box. My League and Post Season mode, real FG/FT all visual aides off except full play art (play calling on auto as it flows far better and I can always override any play coming up the court and free-lance as well). 12 minute quarters.

I am simply blown away at how much control I now have on the court. I am in love with the new dribbling controls and love how I am not just sucked into animations. The level of expression and stringing together dribble moves is fantastic. I have been seeing amazing rebounding, tip-ins, passing is crisp and easy, fast breaks are strong when they are earned, dunks are not a frequent thing, rebounding feels incredible, blocks are realistic it is blowing me away. I love the on the fly menus this year. Super easy to get used to and utilize. And the much criticized TO menu.....once you figure it out...it is a breeze to use. They just need to patch subs in the TO menu sticking. Right now if you want to sub in a TO you need to go into the pause menu and do it so it will stick.

I played 2K15 for several months as well as 2K16 but never felt it like I am with this years game. The feel of the physics, the presentation, the depth of the MyLeague.....it is simply mind blowing.

This game is going to own my soul for years....and I mean multiple years. I won't need another NBA game for the rest of this consoles run. It's that good. I have everything I could ever want with depth of modes, and replay ability.

Injuries offline are way OP default and I am tweaking those settings as well as fatigue rate. 3PT's can be op at default as well. But nothing a few knob turns can't solve long term. I am playing far better defense on this years game than I had on either 2K15 or 16. Far better. I also play off ball defense which IMO is a must. You have to be able to guard Star players off ball to be successful in this years game.

I may even give All-Star a run at some point as I was playing really well on Pro default. I have a feeling All-Star may be the right level for me long term with 2K17.....but time will tell.

I am loving post season mode and using all the classic teams.....it is freaking dope. Also will play a massive Miami Heat My league for sure. The presentation packages are off the hook and second to none.

Simply put this may be the GOAT sports game ever made along with MLB The Show 16 IMO.

This also IMO puts pressure on the other sports games (Madden, The Show) to really step up the presentation and level of depth 2K is able to bring us with offline franchise mode. It simply is so deep and authentic.....I really see myself playing this game for years and years till the next consoles hit (PS5).

I was on Pro for entire 2k career going back to 2k7. 17 I'm on Superstar. I experimented. I started on Rookie and won by 94(obviously too easy). Next game on Pro and won by 40ish(still too easy). Next game on AllStar and won by 25ish(still kind of easy but debated to stay or try Superstar). Ahh what the heck I tried Superstar and it's perfect for me(I win some, I lose some). I was really surprised since I have always played on Pro.

Redboxed the game, as typically i dont purchase until the Black Friday deals

              i think ill pass.....once again

You can jazz up the presentation, and graphics all they want. Its still the exact same flawed game from 2k that ive seen for YEARS

              CPU still makes everything

CPU still makes 1000 steals every game

and once again, and this has been an issue in 2k series since dreamcast days...............you............cannot.......... ...make...........layups

Its utterly hilarious how every single layup, just magically rolls off rim, EVERY time

and CPU will just jack up 3 after 3 and it goes in no matter what, no matter the player

The "honeymoon" phase is over and I still without a doubt can proclaim that this is the single best sports game that I have ever played. From on the court to franchise mode(MYLEAGUE), to presentation, this game has everything that I find enjoyable and look for in sports title.

                Well done 2K... well done.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Interesting. I don't have any problems with layups and the CPU shoots right around 40%-48% in the games I've played. Also, I actually saw an improvement in CPU getting excessive steals. If you look for the passing lanes, ball movement is excellent this year.

I wish I didn't have such a drive to play online, because oh my God these people are infuriating. Big me in the park have 0.2 seconds to make a decision because spam stealers thrive.

Offline with custom sliders/settings- i have tried various sliders/settings with litle to no observable difference- to try to help my cpu teammates defense

in addition to other defense issues mentioned,

the old problem that happened on fast breaks a few games back -
my cpu teammate running back on fastbreak to underneath the basket is occurring again on frequent occasion instead of stopping the ball/finding a man to defend.

Not going to question anyone's gaming experience. All I can divulge is my own playing experience and it is truly the exact opposite. Hall of Fame, original out of the box default sliders, 12 minute quarters, broadcast camera. This is coming from a person that only played Pro/All-star in everything prior to '16. Purposely turned off internet connection so I don't download the patch.

2k17: Once I figured out that the combination of on-ball and especially off-ball defense is absolutely crucial to winning and making matches competitive, I can go on incredible runs 10-0, 14-4, 16-3 runs making the CPU pay. One must also survey the entire court. One must pay attention to everyone on the court defensively. One must icon control the off ball defender to fight around the CPU screen to contest outside shots. Can't solely rely on on-ball defense. I am seeing CPU missing open shots, missing contested shots, missing interior shots. I can make the CPU miss shots left and right when I play defense. I fought back from a 20 point defecit to the Piston at Detroit (Hall of Fame, default sliders, 12 minute quarters, broadcast camera). I am making my contested and uncontested layups, getting to the line with and 1's on layups. Understanding what's the acceptable passing angle, and when to and when not to pass to minimize the amount of turnovers by way of steals. It can be done. A very enjoyable basketball game.

Curiosity. Do you not play off-ball defense? Because that is a crucial part to playing solid defense with 2k17. If I don't play both on-ball and off-ball defense, the CPU will simply set up screens for outside shooters and rain shots all day. I have to constantly switch from on-ball to off-ball back to on-ball and back to off-ball on the same exact play. I must watch the entire field. I must take control of my off ball defender and fight around the CPU screens. It is a chess match where I do read and anticipate what the CPU defense is trying to do.

Can't rely solely on on-ball defense. That is not going to work on 2k17.

Loving the game. Can't get enough of it. There are some quirks but overall, a very addictive game.

i use off ball defense at times just to guide my cpu teammates back to the same zip code of their man that they are set to guard "tight", after they wander off randomly from them.

these are nba players- you shouldnt haver to baby-sit your 4 cpu teammates- it is at a rediculous frequency all game long

i have switched defense settings to 100 (and every other setting/defnsive settings/coach sliders/etc) in the sliders/settings to test and they should be like shadows in staying with their man at that point.

-Im on defnse, during fast break, my cpu teammtes run under the basket no where near their man , who is the corner shooting a 3
-bigs leave man wide open under the backet to double team my man (who i have contained and is not a threat at that moment) outside the 3 point line- various game settings -they have little affect.
-screens totally take a cpu teammate out of the play all game long (every adjustment has been tried in the settings)
-guards wander off court at half court at times on fast breaks

It gets tedious to constantly guide them back to where you need them to be.
i have hope 2k will rectify these to some extent, but we'll see
