    Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

This is the first 2K game in years I haven't gotten into because of the poor gameplay I'm strictly an offline player, I try to play one full season every year and I've successfully completed that for the past few years with the Knicks. I was one who thought they needed to make the gameplay harder because I got to the eastern conference finals with the Knicks the last two years on legend difficulty and wasn't really seeing the challenge I was looking for. Then 2k17 came out and that all changed. The problem is, it changed for the worse. Instead of the computer AI getting better, it got cheesier. Instead of being challenged, I was sucked into suction screens and molasses recoveries. The gameplay went backwards and unfortunately I simply don't see it recovering because (1) they're now more interested in making money off gimmicks and not in gameplay improvements, and (2) Beluba (Mike Wang) literally ignores every sim request and instead focuses on jump shot success in the park when the real issue is animations. I hate to say this but this will probably be the last 2K game I buy . . . and with the Show seeing to improve its product every year, it may be for good.

I think 2k is doing too much. They can't even get the gameplay right. They let a bunch of yes ma'am people test the game and give a bunch of "yes ma'am" feedback. How are they going to properly govern an eleague when they can't even get original game modes to work right. They have slot of good ideas but they seem to put the chicken before the egg Evey year. I mean 2k has been making basketball games for over a decade now and They haven't even perfected simple collision animations. I mean I'm tired of spending my hard earned money on for a bunch of good ideas clustered together. Master the basics first ( @nba2k )

You have some good points man as a 2K loyalist I made it a point to pick up 2K Bball every year and play seasons mostly until Madden came out. This was the first year I couldn't do it. I read the reviews and impressions but decided to try it myself and bought a used copy..I can't believe how much the game had morphed into NBA Live from a gameplay standpoint and what really is puzzling ,from a player graphics standpoint. How someone let this game out the door with those player models are beyond me.. Forget being slightly off the bad ones are unrecognizable, and look like crackheads..The gameplay and AI has fallen off and I don't see the SIM in it anymore which I am sure can be achieved with drastic slider changes...All these patches are catered to a different crowd and appear to have made the gameplay worse...Until otherwise I will follow my Madden gameplan which is wait for the reviews and buy a used copy or copy on discount during Black Friday....... I know we have SIM minded people on the 2K team some were a part of OS maybe their voice is not being heard...

          Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

I know this'll get lost in the shuffle here but someone insisted I move it to this thread. Anyway, this games physics are trash.

A lot of people complain about CPU, algorithms, badges, etc. But the problem with this game is much worse. And I don't know if the pro scene will incorporate any of us, but regardless, to quote Chris Smoove: 2K ain't ready for prime time, baby.

Physics: The current physics engine is the worst in any AAA sports game out. All EA titles (I haven't played Live but I've heard) have better physics engine. There is an absolute lack of weight to players and it fundamentally ruins every other aspect of the game.
Dribbling: It was said, pre-launch, that this iteration of 2K would have the most complex dribble controls to date. That there'd be a real skill gap between controller masters and novices. I do agree dribbling is great from a control standpoint, but it's flawed because players have inconsistent weight. A bump from a defender can knock you completely off of your path like they weigh 400 lbs, but that same defender can shift back into the play effortlessly after being crossed over. The only true way to discard a defender is to hope the Ankle Breaker badge triggers (And even then he may hop back into the play magically) which creates a spamming meta. "I know if I keep doing the double behind the back move and animation will trigger". Whereas if a true physics engine existed, a rapid change in direction, against the defenders momentum, would be enough to get some space. Defenders can follow you in a full sprint and still be able to smoothly respond to you going in the opposite direction. This as we know is physically impossible unless you want your knee ligaments to snap like twigs.
Stealing: Another aspect of the dribbling game is stealing the ball. It's another aspect of the game that (mostly) relies on canned animations. The other day I seen somebody say 2K17 had live ball physics and I almost threw up from laughing. Sometimes the ball is live like when a user controlled player dribbles off a defenders foot (CPU can dribble off your forehead and still maintain possession) but for the most part it's completely attached to the player and reliant on animations. Swiping at the ball should never make me jump on my opponents back. I should get the steal or at least cause an interruption in the dribble, or expose myself to being crossed up and exposed for reaching. Yet there are a dozen animations that disregard realism. Steals that occur when swiping up and knocking the ball in the air are the only times where the ball feels alive.
Shooting: Speaking of a live ball, blocking shots is still a crap-shoot. There are times when the ball goes completely through a defenders hand because the animation is more important. Or when 2K forces your player to whiff on a block for no reason. Chasing down Isaiah Thomas with KD should result in a situation where IT has to adjust his shot and use the rim for protection. Something he is adept at 2K should make the the player (or CPU) responsible for adjusting the shot instead of making KD jump in the opposite direction or violently swing his arm at nothing.
Passing: It's still flawed. I think we all know how bad it is offensively, but on the defensive end it's as bad as it's ever been. 2K once again does not force players to make smart entry or inbound passes. So many times the opponent will hastily inbound the ball and I'll be in perfect position for the steal and most times my player either whiffs or turns into a ghost and the ball flies right through him. Same on post entry passes and alley oops. The game decides when it will let you interrupt or intercept these passes. If the ball is in the air and I'm in between the passer and the target, I should be able to at least smack the ball away.

I'm really thinking about sitting 2K18 out if their big announcement isn't a new or at least updated physics engine to correct these issues. I mean these machines are powerful as ever. Games way more demanding than 5 on 5 basketball have way better physics. Madden is 11 on 11 and had better physics in 2016, but they've already announced that Madden 18 will upgrade to a better physics engine. They have football on lock the same way 2K has hoops, yet they continue to improve. We can't excusing 2K's lack of execution.

            Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

First of you hit the nail on the head with this post. That's the problem with 2k. You don't have to learn how to play the game or basketball for that matter you just have to learn how the physics and animations work for the specific year. The worst part is they have these 2k yes men ( shake and Robbie 2bros hand-in-hand scar) who cosign this game to the public and never speak the truth about the game they just speak on the concept of the game. 2k is excellent at concepts but not so great at application.
To add a couple more things to ur post...... dunks layups and shots. Being forced into a fade away just because a defender is in front of you.(Steph curry n a bunch of other shooters in the NBA don't shoot fade aways just because a defender is present. Last year in the semi finals I watched Steph shoot over Steve Adams (7') without fading n hit all net. When you attempt a dunk we don't always get a dunk animation. I'm sick of having a clear lane to the basket and attempting a dunk but get a Jump shot animation. Or trying to dunk wide open or 1 on 1 and getting a layup animation when my player has a high dunk and high contact dunk rating. In all the gameplay/animations/physics are inconsistent throughout the various game modes. My career gp doesn't match pro-am or the park. My GM/ my league doesn't match quick match online. As I said before 2k hasn't made a game for the Tru 2kers n a long time they are only interested in making more and more money of off the users.

              You guys are jokers.

As soon as real physics are introduced, people complain about the momentum and how players move like molasses, or delayed.

I highly doubt you even play the game enough to know what we are talking about.

The cheese in this game is like something I've never seen before.
In the last few games online I was clearly better than my opponents and because of that my players couldn't make jumpshots to save their lives. I was 1/17 from 3 in one game even though the releases were on point, the players were wide open and had good 3 pt ratings.
I still won by 15 but I should have won by 30 at least. If this isn't the most clear example of scripting I don't know what is.
I swear I'm not playing this game ever again, the cheese is unbelievable and you can do nothing about it.

                    Well done 2k
Your standards for quality are very low....even if this game looks pretty, the controls are sloppy, animations ruin momentum and fluidity, and there are soooooooo many things wrong with the gameplay that to name them all would take days or weeks. The 2 biggest issues in my mind are computer stealing passes like they have glue on their hands and telepathic brains, AND the blocks from behind (even point guards are able to ruin fast breaks just by jumping behind someone who has them beat and is right under the basket. The physics of the game can be great, but they can also be horrible. 2k is going to continue losing support unless these issues are fixed in 2k18. NBA LIVE IS COMING BACK!!!

I've done plenty of things where I was like that would not have happened in 2K16. Playing defense with lock down defenders and guys with high steal rating is so fun because they will rip you! Rondo and Wade were beast on defense when I played with Chicago, the rebounding is awesome too.

My biggest issues now are slow passes at times and lack of speed to the hole, sometimes its a wide open lane to the basket (like on fast breaks) and your player is just jogging to it even when pressing turbo, not sure what the issue it maybe its something im doing wrong.
Magnet pull and force is not gone...very often, i get sucked into a player just for being next to them, and it is sometimes impossible to move your player. One instance that occurs regularly for me is when I am running up the court (maybe on a fast break, maybe not) and I go to the corner, either to get the open corner 3 or simply to drag my defender away from the basket and allow for another player to have the open lane...but if the defender sticks on me and eliminates that corner 3 option, I always want to sprint right at the basket to beat him backdoor, but the game WON'T let my player get away from the black hole that is the corner baseline and I have to basically force my player away from that spot. Sometimes, I can still get the backdoor, but more often than not, it ruins the opportunity I had. 2k, fix your crappy game or you lose fans.

Customizing options doesn't help with the flaws in the game that were in last years game as well, and you can't change sliders in mycareer or online

Control responsiveness isn't much better than last year, in fact, in some ways it is worse.

There should be many more negatives in your critique, and you are missing out on a few of the positives, like the ability to time layups and half/full court shots or the improved stamina. The game is better than 2k16, but not by much.

Are the servers any better on PS4 than they are on XBox? I've been playing a lot of MyPark on XBox and it is horrid, crashing constantly, lobbies have few people in them. Are the servers any better on PS4? A lot of crashing/lag issues? Any issues with lobbies being kinda sparse?

After some thought, I legit dislike 2k17. I might even say I strongly dislike it. The only reason I'd play it is because it's bball and I have a few friends on there who are good and fun to run with. Even then, it wears off when you realize how predictable the game is.

I played the game for about two weeks, sold it on Ebay shortly thereafter. I'm officially done with 2K, at least until I see a marked improvement in offline gameplay.
